The sun will soon stop shining on Long Island.
While downstate New Yorkers won’t be fortunate enough to witness a total solar eclipse this afternoon, the eclipse should be visible in Nassau and Suffolk counties in about 90% totality just before 3:30 p.m.
Best time to view the eclipse on Long Island?
Folks on Long Island will be able to take in the spectacle starting around 2:10 p.m. — with the eclipse lasting until 4:36 p.m., according to NASA.
There will be eclipse viewing parties across Long Island on Monday, including at Hofstra University, SUNY Old Westbury and Jones Beach.
A pair of solar eclipse glasses will be provided with admission to the museum.
The Long Island Explorium is also hosting a solar eclipse viewing party from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are limited and costs $10 per person.
Kathy Hochul also announced the state would distribute limited edition “I Love NY” eclipse glasses at several locations across the state, including at the Long Island Welcome Center on the Long Island Expressway Eastbound in Dix Hills.
Soon, Long Island will be without sunlight.
The moon will pass between the sun and the Earth for a few minutes, allowing the tri-state region to witness a partial solar eclipse.
Although there won’t be a total solar eclipse this afternoon for those living in the downstate of New York, Nassau and Suffolk counties should be able to see the eclipse in roughly 90% totality shortly before 3:30 p.m. me.
It won’t happen in the New York metro area again until 2079.
When is the best time on Long Island to see the eclipse?
The show will begin at 2:10 p.m. for Long Islanders to witness. m. — with the eclipse continuing until 4:36 p.m. m. as stated by NASA.
Just before 3 p.m., a third of the moon will be obscured from view. me. and by 3:25 p.m. me. the moon will completely encircle the sun.
at 4:36 p.m. M. when the sun is once again visible due to the moon’s full northward drift.
In what location is the eclipse visible?
On Monday, there will be eclipse viewing events at SUNY Old Westbury, Hofstra University, and Jones Beach, among other locations on Long Island.
There will be viewing parties at state parks such as Heckscher State Park, Sunken Meadow State Park, and Hallock State Park Preserve. There will be giveaways of free glasses.
Families are invited to a viewing party at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Uniondale, which will feature interactive activities for the kids. Entry to the museum will include a pair of solar eclipse glasses.

Long Island will not witness a total eclipse because it is not in the path of totality, but those who want to see the show in person must wear protective eyewear to protect their eyes from the sun.
Eclipse glasses are being given away for free in many locations in Nassau and Suffolk counties. These include the East Hampton and Long Beach libraries, as well as all Warby Parker stores.
