The Michelin Guide, which Bay Area restaurants are no stranger to, has added several Bay Area hotels to the top of its 2024 rankings, which the company has significantly altered to highlight the most luxurious stays available.
Since the 1920s, Michelin, a French tire company, has ranked and been known for its best-of lists.
After announcing its new system of ranking hotels in France earlier this month, on Wednesday the company unveiled the revamping of its rankings for U.S. hotels.
“With this new distinction, the MICHELIN Guide has opened up a brand-new chapter in the service it provides for travelers, which has been its lifeblood for the past 124 years,” Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, said in the news release.
Of the 124 U.S. hotels recognized, only 11 received three-key rankings.
Four of those are in the Bay Area: the SingleThread Inn in Healdsburg, the Auberge du Soleil, Auberge Resorts Collection in Rutherford, Meadowood Napa Valley in St. Helena and Canyon Ranch Woodside in Woodside.
It was one of only four Bay Area restaurants that made OpenTable’s Top 100 list last year.
A couple of San Francisco-proper hotels received two keys — the Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero and the Battery in the Jackson Square area.
Although the company has made significant changes to highlight the most opulent stays available, several Bay Area hotels have been ranked #1 in the Michelin Guide for 2024—a guide that Bay Area restaurants are familiar with.
