NEUTRAL

More than fifty college campuses in at least half of the states in the union have seen protesters arrested by police. There have been protests at numerous other schools without any arrests made.

It has been almost three weeks since the first arrests at Columbia University on April 18, and pro-Palestinian demonstrators are still facing arrest on campus.

Most recently, 33 people were arrested by DC Metropolitan Police on Wednesday morning, 13 days after the camp was first established, when they cleared out the encampment at George Washington University in Washington, DC.

A CNN analysis of statements from the university and the police indicates that since the first arrests at Columbia, more than 2,400 people have been taken into custody.

From there, arrests continued for several days, with police apprehending over 500 students on 13 campuses in 11 states between April 22 and 25. At the close of business on Friday, May 3, over 2,100 people had been arrested on over 40 campuses spread across 25 states.

After several days of arrests on numerous campuses, New York and California are the states with the highest number of arrests. Five different dates saw the arrest of protestors by the police in New York City, with over 100 of them made at Columbia University on April 18. In all, over 600 persons have been arrested in the state; 44 of those occurrences occurred at the University at Buffalo and Long Island’s Stony Brook University.

In California, there have been more than 400 arrests. On April 24, about 100 people were taken into custody at USC in Los Angeles, and a week later, over 200 people were taken into custody at UCLA, which is located across town. 64 protestors were detained at the University of California, San Diego, and about 35 protestors were detained at Cal Poly Humboldt in northern California.

CNN was able to verify with authorities how many of the more than 2,400 people detained are either students or have some other connection to the university, such as faculty or staff. This accounts for about 1,600, or roughly two-thirds of the total number of people detained.

Of those who were arrested, over half were students or individuals connected to the university. The remaining 46% of arrests were of people not connected to the university, such as community members, former students, and people whose affiliations were unknown.
