The Wireless Power Consortium (the stewards of the Qi wireless charging standard) have certified the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 – it officially supports Qi 2.1.
Qi 2.1 introduced new profiles relating to cases – Magnetic Cover Power Enhancement (MCPE) and Magnetic Cover Power Magnet (MCPM).
Qi 2.1 certification for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 (SM-D637U) Sorry for the alphabet soup, but the WPC isn’t helping the situation with its confusing profiles.
Anyway, the page doesn’t list anything above BPP for the Galaxy Z Fold7, which is clearly not true.
But we’re not holding out hope for Samsung adopting the full magnet experience with the Galaxy Z Fold7 – it is more likely that it will follow the Galaxy S25 strategy with Magnet Cases.
The Qi wireless charging standard’s stewards, the Wireless Power Consortium, have certified the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, making it officially compatible with Qi 2.1. Here, though, the WPC is hiding some information.
The first is that the device only supports the Basic Power Profile (BPP) at 5W, which is most likely unrealistic. The Extended Power Profile (EPP) of the Galaxy Z Fold6 is 15W, and we anticipate that the follow-up model will support at least that much.
New case-related profiles, Magnetic Cover Power Enhancement (MCPE) and Magnetic Cover Power Magnet (MCPM), were introduced by Qi 2.1. Indeed, both use the word “magnetic” and have magnets, but they are fundamentally different. With MCPM, phones with built-in magnets can strengthen their attachment by using additional “feedthrough” magnets in the case to strengthen the magnetic field. BPP and EPP phones are covered by MCPE (i.e. e. ones without magnets) and it enables them to operate in the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) mode, i.e. e. the Qi version of a magnet.
For the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 (SM-D637U), Qi 2.1 certification is available.
Sorry to bother you with the alphabet soup, but the WPC’s perplexing profiles are making matters worse. In any case, the page for the Galaxy Z Fold7 does not list anything higher than BPP, which is obviously false.
In case you’re wondering why the model number is “SM-D637U,” it appears that the WPC does not employ Samsung’s standard designations. The Z Fold6, for instance, is designated “SC-55E,” the Z Fold Special Edition is designated “SM-D269N,” and the Z Fold5 is designated “SM-D617S.” None of these model numbers correspond to Samsung’s “SM-F” foldables.
The page’s “Coming Soon” placeholder image makes it obvious that it isn’t complete. However, we don’t think Samsung will embrace the full magnet experience with the Z Fold7; instead, we think it will take the Galaxy S25 approach with Magnet Cases. Cases like this Spigen case, for instance, employ the MCPE profile.
