Decades after her death in a tragic car crash, Mansfield again enjoys a place of honor at the festival, thanks to her daughter, Mariska Hargitay.
Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, makes her directorial debut with the documentary My Mom Jayne, which just premiered in the Cannes Classics section of the festival.

I grew up with pictures of my mother, of course. Hargitay visited Deadline’s Cannes Studio and remarked, “There were definitely a lot taken.”. But because of how liberated, content, and in love she was with my father, the pictures of her in Cannes in particular have always held such special meaning for me. As a result, those pictures were always kind of burned into my heart. Being here, bringing her back, and sharing her story was a truly lovely experience. “.”.
When Hargitay’s mother died in the Louisiana accident, she was just three years old. Mickey Jr. and Zoltan, Mariska’s older brothers. were all three hurt, and they were in the backseat at the time. The paramedics left the scene without realizing Mariska was trapped inside the car, as the movie discloses; they didn’t come back until Zoltan questioned them about his sister’s whereabouts.
The curvy Mansfield was compelled by the Hollywood studio system to play a blond bombshell, and in order to get the desired effect, she dyed her hair. Mansfield was a multilingual woman who played the violin and classical piano and took acting seriously, despite her glamorous girl persona.
“I found it fascinating to witness her talent and realize that she was never able to create the films or artwork she desired,” Hargitay said. “I was interested in hearing that story and getting to know the individual once more. I simply yearned and ached to know the real person—what made her tick, what scared her, what brought her joy and pain, in other words. “”.
In My Mom Jayne, which premieres on HBO and HBO Max on June 27, shocking information about Hargitay’s biological father is revealed. The actress-director has never previously disclosed this information. We won’t give those away here.
The 27th season of SVU will be Hargitay’s next project later this summer. She will be reunited with her friend, actress Kelli Giddish, who is returning to the show as Det, as exclusively reported by Deadline. rollins, Amanda.
