Oregon State surpasses Florida State to reach College World Series, leaving no doubt about their dominance

Oregon State won the Corvallis Super Regional at Goss Stadium on Sunday night, defeating Florida State 14–10, thanks to a flurry of home runs that were hit early and frequently.

After scoring thirteen runs in the first three innings, the Beavers never looked back, winning the third and final game of the super regional. OSU hit five home runs off of six Florida State pitchers, including a three-run shot from Canon Reeder and a grand slam from Trent Caraway.

After the 2019 season, Oregon State (47-14-1) will make its eighth appearance in the College World Series, and its first under Canham since replacing Pat Casey and interim coach Pat Bailey. 2006, 2007, and 2018 saw the Beavers win national championships.

The Beavers earned the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament by playing a road-heavy independent schedule. made it to the College World Series as an 8 seed after winning the Corvallis regional and super regional. Louisville, which defeated Miami in its super regional in three games, will play Oregon State in the CWS opener.

OSU and Louisville have only met once, during the 2013 College World Series. The Beavers triumphed 11–4.

The College World Series will start on Friday and end on June 23.

Caraway, Aiva Arquette, Gavin Turley, and Tyce Peterson each contributed two of the Beavers’ twelve hits. Reeder and Caraway hit seven RBIs between them. Each of six Beavers scored two runs.

On a night when the Beavers’ offense dominated Goss Stadium, Oregon State’s pitching, despite its flaws, was adequate. Five OSU relievers and starter James DeCremer allowed 17 hits, but they repeatedly worked their way out of jams to prevent Florida State from posing a serious threat.

Max Williams hit a two-run home run to left in the first inning, dealing the Seminoles the first blow. The following hour’s fireworks, however, were Oregon State’s.

With a seven-run first inning, the Beavers got the game started. On AJ Singer’s fielder’s choice, Caraway scored after three of the first four batters reached base. OSU then took a 3-2 lead after Peterson and Jacob Krieg hit consecutive singles to score runs. Then Reeder hit a three-run homer with a huge blast over the left field fence. After Carson McEntire hit a home run to left, the score was 7-2.

Following a 7-3 deficit reduction by Florida State, Oregon State dominated with a six-run third. Caraway reached center field with a grand slam after loading the bases with one out. Turley followed suit two batters later, hitting a two-run homer to center to put Oregon State ahead 13-3.

The Beavers had to focus on getting outs after that. With two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, Florida State reduced the lead. During the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, Oregon State managed to avoid more damage by forcing the Seminoles to leave a total of seven runners.

Zach Kmatz gave OSU a boost on the mound by striking out seven straight batters, keeping the lead at 14-8 after eight. An Oregon State celebration was sparked by Nelson Keljo’s final two outs.
