Worldwide Bow’s ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ topped the box office with $2.5 million in sales

The live-action take on the beloved animated franchise through yesterday had grossed $54.9M from the international box office, including $29.1M in previews.
The Dean DeBlois-directed HTTYD is playing in 81 offshore markets and is on track to gross an estimated $117.7M this session, including previews that began last weekend.
That would make the Gerard Butler-starrer the 4th biggest international box office opener of the year among Hollywood movies (behind Lilo, Minecraft and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning).
In terms of individual markets, Mexico kicked into gear with $2.3M on Friday to reach $4.4M including previews.
Korea through Friday zoomed to $5.3M including previews and with a terrific 99% CVG Egg score.

With a worldwide debut of slightly over $200 million, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon is expected to surpass pre-weekend estimates. Up until yesterday, the live-action adaptation of the well-loved animated series had brought in $54 million at the global box office, which included $29 million from previews. Including domestic projections, the opening start is expected to be $200 million worldwide through Sunday.

With a worldwide bow of that caliber, Hiccup and Toothless would be able to boast of the fourth-best opening of the year globally, behind China’s Ne Zha 2, Lilo and Stitch, and A Minecraft Movie. In terms of live-action remakes, it would rank seventh in terms of popularity, behind Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and Alice in Wonderland.

With previews starting last weekend, the Dean DeBlois-directed HTTYD is expected to make $117.7 million this session, with 81 offshore markets seeing action. With that, the Gerard Butler film would rank fourth among Hollywood films in terms of its international box office debut of the year, behind Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Lilo, and Minecraft.

Additionally, it would be the No. The live-action remakes of the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Lilo & Stitch, The Jungle Book, and Aladdin are the sixth offshore launch ever.

With $2.3M on Friday, Mexico jumped into gear in terms of individual markets, reaching $4.4M with previews. It’s the obvious no, playing on 3,765 screens. With a 68 percent market share, there is only one title.

With $3.3M from weekday previews, the UK & Ireland is at $4.8M through Friday. Across 2,000 screens, Friday brought in $1.05 million, Universal’s fourth No. one market opening of the year.

Without any previews, China debuted on 35,000 screens on Friday with $2.03 million for the day, placing it at the top of the list. at a market share of 44%. Despite being a small figure, it was sufficient for the largest opening day of a live-action adaptation in the previous five years, ranking alongside Inside Out 2, surpassing Mufasa, and more than doubling Wonka and Sonic Three. Maoyan’s score is a solid 9 out of 5.

On Friday, Brazil added $689K at No. With five days of previews, the running cume will reach $4.09 million. Friday’s gross is higher than that of Sonic 3, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin, and comparable to Mufasa.

With previews included, Korea shot up to $5.3M through Friday, and it had an amazing 99 percent CVG Egg score. The cume has already outlived Mufasa and The Little Mermaid in the marketplace to date.

Also arriving at No. is HTTYD. France ($2.8M through Friday); Germany ($2.4M); Australia ($1.5M); Spain ($2M — Friday was the franchise’s fourth-best of the year); Italy ($1.4M); and Thailand ($1.1M — posted the largest opening Friday of 2025).
