In the field of healthcare, medical bias is an unpleasant reality.
According to a National Library of Medicine study, out of the nearly 1,000 ER visits that were examined, women with acute abdominal pain were about 25% less likely than men to receive an opioid prescription.
An additional study revealed that middle-aged women who displayed symptoms of heart disease, such as chest pain, had twice the likelihood of receiving a mental health diagnosis compared to men who made the same presentation.
What unites these prejudices is the tendency to undervalue the suffering of women relative to that of men. And this idea was brought to light when a user on Mastodon, a social sharing website akin to X (previously known as Twitter), shared the account of a woman who had her husband’s root canal done on the same day. Even though they were both seen by the same physician, she received an ibuprofen prescription while he received a Percocet for his pain.
Hundreds of women shared their own stories after the post went viral on Twitter, garnering over 4.5 million views.
