Residents are reminded to follow these safety measures to help keep themselves and their pets safe from rabies from an infected animal.

Pets should always be closely watched in your backyard and kept on leashes when taking walks.

Every dog, cat, and ferret should have their rabies vaccinations updated through their veterinarian’s office or a nearby rabies vaccination clinic.

Pet food should never be left outside; trash cans should be covered.

Steer clear of any interaction, including feeding and petting, with wildlife.

When a cat, fox, raccoon, or bat bites or scratches another animal, it can spread rabies. Additionally, it can spread when an infected animal’s saliva gets into a person’s or another animal’s mouth, nose, eyes, or open wounds.

Individuals who handled, fed, or were attacked by the raccoon may need to receive preventive care. Since rabies is a deadly illness, vaccinations for prevention must begin as soon as feasible. The Maryland Department of Health cautions citizens against leaving food dishes outside or feeding stray or wild animals. Additionally, pet owners should ensure that their animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.

A shift in typical behavior is the most reliable indicator of rabies. Some animals exhibit signs of shyness, timidity, composure, and docility, while others become agitated, irritable, and aggressive. Normally nocturnal animals may become active and noticeable during the day. Animals that are infected may also appear confused or have trouble walking. Other symptoms include convulsions, drooling, foaming at the mouth, weakness, paralysis, and difficulty eating or drinking.
