Judge Juan Merchan declared that Donald Trump was in contempt of court for nine of the first ten breaches of the gag order, fining him $1,000 for each. This marked the resumption of the former president’s hush money trial.

He cautioned that more infractions might result in “an incarceratory punishment.”.

The judge, who seemed pleased with the trial’s speed, did say he would grant the parties permission to take a day off so that Mr. Trump could attend his son Barron Trump’s high school graduation on May 17.

Gary Farro, the banker for former Trump fixer Michael Cohen, continued to testify in court this morning. Farro had taken the stand at the end of the previous week. To hide an alleged affair with Mr. Trump, Cohen played a key role in providing Stormy Daniels with a $130,000 payment.

Keith Davidson, the former attorney for Ms. Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal, who arranged the sale of their stories to ensure their silence—which became crucial in October 2016 following the release of the Access Hollywood tape—ties a large portion of the narrative together.

What information did the court reveal regarding Karen McDougal’s hush money arrangement?

The lawyer for a former Playboy model who claimed to have had an affair with Donald Trump for months offered a tabloid editor a “blockbuster” story, which started talks that helped his 2016 campaign conceal a potentially damaging story in the run-up to Election Day.

In the former president’s hush money trial, jurors were shown a string of text messages exchanged between Karen McDougal’s then-attorney Keith Davidson and then-National Enquirer editor Dylan Howard. Dylan Howard mediated a $150,000 purchase of the story rights from publisher David Pecker.
