NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban announced Thursday he is resigning from his post helming the country’s largest police department amid a federal investigation into its nightclub enforcement, according to an internal memo obtained by News 4.
Serving as your Commissioner has been the greatest honor of my career, and I am proud to stand next to you each and every day.
I have dedicated over 30 years of service to this department.
Every day, whether as a patrol officer on the streets of the Bronx, the Commissioner of the department, and my many stops in between, I have been inspired by the courage, tenacity, and selflessness of each of you.
The greatest city in the world would not be so without the greatest police force in the world.
Together, we have removed thousands of firearms from the streets, brought justice to countless victims of violent crimes, and helped to heal and bring communities together.
My complete focus has always been on the NYPD – the department and people I love and have dedicated over 30 years of service to.
Thank you for the trust you have placed in me, and for the opportunity you have given me to serve alongside the members of this great department.
I feel strongly that we have the best police force in the world, and have complete faith in the leaders across the NYPD.
Edward A. Caban”

According to an internal memo obtained by News 4, NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban announced on Thursday that he is leaving his position as head of the nation’s biggest police force in the midst of a federal investigation into the department’s nightclub enforcement.

The complete text of the memo that Caban sent to the NYPD is provided below.

“To the New York City Police Department Members:.

I was reminded of the NYPD’s steadfast dedication and resiliency on yesterday’s somber day of remembrance as we joined together to honor our fallen brothers and sisters. I am honored to be your Commissioner and am glad to be here every day. It has been the greatest honor of my career.

For more than 30 years, I have been devoted to this department. I have been inspired by each of your bravery, persistence, and selflessness on a daily basis, whether I’m working as a Bronx patrol officer, the department commissioner, or any of the numerous stops in between. Without the best police force in the world, the greatest city in the world would not be what it is. Collaboratively, we have eliminated numerous firearms from public spaces, provided justice to innumerable victims of severe crimes, and fostered healing and unity within communities. Families, entrepreneurs, visitors, and everyone else who uses the subway, strolls the streets, and lives in safety and freedom in New York all do so because of you.

Throughout my over thirty years of service, my entire attention has been on the NYPD, the department, and the people I adore. Our department has been distracted by the news of these recent developments, though, and I refuse to allow my focus to be diverted from our vital work or the security of the NYPD’s men and women. To the best interests of this department and city, I have decided to step down as Police Commissioner. I have the utmost respect and gratitude for the courageous officers who work for this department, and I believe that the NYPD should have a Commissioner who can only think about protecting and serving New York City.

I express my gratitude for your confidence in me and for providing me with the chance to work with the outstanding department members. I really believe that the NYPD is led by some of the best police officers in the world, and I have total faith in them.

Edward. Caban “.
