AMMAN/CAIRO, Sept 8 (Reuters) – Israeli airstrikes killed 16 people in western Syria and wounded dozens more overnight, Syrian state media reported on Monday, the deadliest Israeli attack reported by Syrian authorities since the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus was hit in April.
There was no immediate comment from Israel, which typically remains silent on reports of strikes in Syria.
They said it was believed to house a team of Iranian military experts involved in weapons production.
Iran’s foreign minister spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said Tehran strongly condemned the “criminal attack” in Syria.
Syrian state media also reported that the strikes caused two fires, which firefighters were working to extinguish.
AMMAN/CAIRO, Sept. 8 (Reuters) – Syrian state media reported on Monday that Israeli airstrikes in western Syria killed sixteen people and injured numerous others over the course of the night. This is the deadliest Israeli attack that Syrian authorities have documented since an attack on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus in April.
Israel, which normally says nothing in response to reports of strikes in Syria, did not respond right away.
Israel began the strikes at about 11:20 p.m., according to the Syrian state news agency SANA, which cited a military source. m. without providing further details, the attack took place at (2020 GMT on Sunday, targeting “a number of military sites in the central region.”.
The source said that some of the missiles had been shot down by Syrian air defenses. 36 people were reported injured, six of whom were listed as critically ill, according to a local health official quoted by SANA.
According to two intelligence sources in the region, there has been multiple attacks on a significant military research center that produces chemical weapons. It is situated in the Hama province near the Mediterranean coast, close to Masyaf. They claimed that it was thought to be the home of a group of Iranian military specialists engaged in the manufacture of armaments.
Senior military sources in the region who are close to Tehran and Damascus, however, refuted reports that it was a chemical weapons facility, stating that the target was a well-known research facility in Syria.
A clear act of aggression, the attack was denounced by the Syrian Foreign Ministry. In a statement obtained by SANA, it was stated that in addition to the 16 dead and 36 injured, it had also “materially damaged some residential areas.”.
Tehran vehemently denounces the “criminal attack” in Syria, according to spokesman for the foreign minister of Iran, Nasser Kanaani.
