Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., has won the race for Arizona’s open Senate seat, beating out Republican Kari Lake, a close ally of President-elect Donald Trump, according to The Associated Press Monday night.
Gallego has served in the House of Representatives since 2015, representing the 7th and 3rd congressional districts in Arizona.
The Fox News Power Rankings in September rated the Arizona Senate race as “Leans Democrat.”

While Lake often played up her relationship with Trump, who had polled higher than her in the state, Gallego did not often do the same with Harris during his campaign.

In 2022, Lake made an unsuccessful bid for governor of Arizona, losing to Gov. D-Ariz, Katie Hobbs. Before running for governor, she spent 27 years in the media as a news anchor for a local television station in Arizona.
Citing concerns about fraud in the state, she contested the results following the 2022 defeat. Lake continues to assert—in line with Trump and many of his supporters—that there were notable anomalies in 2020 and 2022. The Republican National Committee has committed substantial funds to election integrity initiatives as a result of the worries.

Gallego had an advantage, running unopposed in the Democratic primary, while Lake faced off against Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb in the Republican Senate primary.
The Arizona Senate race was rated as “Leans Democrat” by Fox News Power Rankings in September. Likewise, a leading political handicapper, the Cook Political Report, rated the race as “Lean Democrat.”. “..”.

Currently, Sen. I-Ariz and Kyrsten Sinema. who was elected in the Democratic Party. Though she still participates in Senate caucuses with Democrats, she formally registered as an independent years ago after opposing her fellow Democrats during the legislative filibuster. Sen, Sinema. Manchin, Joe I-W. Virginia. are recognized for defying the Democrats in order to maintain the 60-vote requirement for the filibuster.
The senators both chose not to seek reelection.
According to voters in key battleground states, the next presidential administration needs to “get serious” about immigration.
Sinema’s possible third-party run threatened to upset the Senate race before she declared she would not run for reelection, and strategists were uncertain how her supporters would react.
Gallego often had a single-digit lead over Lake in polling before the Senate election. He even succeeded in outperforming his rival in polls where Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite split-ticket voting becoming less common in the state, experts hypothesized that his relationship with Latino voters may have encouraged it.
Gallego did not frequently do the same with Harris during his campaign, but Lake frequently emphasized her relationship with Trump, who had polled higher in the state than she did.
