Man arrested in Christmas Eve attack on 2 people at Manhattan’s Grand Central

NEW YORK (AP) — A man accused of using a knife to slash a man and a woman in Manhattan’s Grand Central subway station faced assault and menacing charges Wednesday.
Both victims were in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital after the attack and on Wednesday, police said.
It was not immediately known who will represent the man in court.
Mayor Eric Adams told reporters in Harlem that the man had suffered from a history of mental illness.
The attack came just hours after the man accused of burning a woman to death inside a New York City subway train appeared in Brooklyn criminal court to face two murder charges.

NEW YORK — A man was charged with assault and menacing Wednesday after allegedly slashing a man and a woman in Manhattan’s Grand Central subway station with a knife.

Following the attack at 10:15 p.m., the man was taken into custody on charges of assault, reckless endangerment, menacing, harassment, disorderly conduct, and possession of a weapon. A. which resulted in a neck injury for a 26-year-old woman and a wrist injury for a 42-year-old man, according to police.

According to police, both victims were in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital both on Wednesday and following the attack.

The man’s legal representative was not immediately known.

The attacks occurred as worries about crime in the subways were on the rise, especially in light of a man who was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of setting a woman on fire in a subway car. The woman’s injuries caused her death.

In Harlem, Mayor Eric Adams told reporters the man had a history of mental illness.

According to the New York Post, the woman who was slashed claimed to have recently left the No. 4 train and was en route to her workplace when she was assaulted.

According to her account in the newspaper, she was repeatedly asked, “What’s your problem?” by her attacker before he lunged at her with a small knife and sliced through her throat, punching her to the ground.

The assault happened just hours after the man who is suspected of killing a woman by burning her alive inside a subway train in New York City showed up in Brooklyn criminal court to answer to two murder charges.

According to federal immigration authorities, Sebastian Zapeta, 33, is a citizen of Guatemala who came to the United States. A. Illegally, did not have to enter a plea, and remained silent during the Brooklyn criminal court hearing.

Zapeta, who is being held at the city’s Rikers Island prison complex, is scheduled to return to court on Friday. His attorney has not yet asked for bail.
