LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – The worst-case scenario has been realized in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, where an estimated 1,000 structures, many of them homes, have been destroyed by a Santa Ana-wind-fueled wildfire, authorities confirmed on Wednesday morning.
At a news conference Wednesday morning, L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone revealed that an estimated 1,000 structures had been lost.
Dozens of Los Angeles County schools were closed Wednesday due to the fire.
A number of schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District were also closed.
Pacific Palisades is located about 10 miles from Malibu, where the Franklin Fire burned more than 4,000 acres and burned several homes after erupting during similar windy conditions in December.
LOS ANGELES (KTLA)—A wildfire fueled by Santa Ana winds has destroyed an estimated 1,000 structures, many of them homes, in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, bringing the worst-case scenario to life, authorities confirmed Wednesday morning.
About 10:30 a.m., the Palisades Fire was first reported. A. Tuesday in North Piedra Morada Drive, block 1100. Without any containment, the fire had spread to over 5,000 acres by Wednesday morning.
Wednesday morning at a press conference, L. a. According to County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone, an estimated 1,000 buildings had been destroyed. A “high number of people who didn’t evacuate” also sustained severe injuries.
According to CalFire, the entire Palisades community was ordered to evacuate, all the way down to the Pacific Ocean. Tens of thousands of homes and businesses were affected by the evacuations, which also included warnings for the Santa Monica and Calabasas regions.
People and pets were placed in an evacuation shelter at the Westwood Recreation Center, located at 1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd.
Classes were canceled Wednesday in the combined school districts of Santa Monica and Las Virgenes.
Because of the fire, dozens of schools in Los Angeles County were closed on Wednesday. Additionally, several schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District were shut down.
Investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
Approximately ten miles away from Malibu, Pacific Palisades is where the Franklin Fire broke out in December under similar windy conditions, destroying over 4,000 acres and a number of homes.
