According to police, a shooting at an education center in central Sweden has killed about ten people, including the alleged shooter.

The attack on Tuesday at the Risbergska school in Orebro, 200 kilometers (124 miles) west of the Swedish capital, was dubbed the “worst mass shooting in Swedish history” by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

The police stated that they did not previously know the male perpetrator, who they believe to be among the deceased. They claimed that he was acting alone and that there was no immediately apparent motive.

At a press conference in the evening, Kristersson stated, “It is hard to take in the magnitude of what has happened today.”.

Earlier, police warned that multiple people had been injured and that the death toll could still rise.

At least four people are undergoing surgery, and several injured have been transported to hospitals.

Five people had been shot, according to the police, and the incident was being looked into as an attempted murder, arson, and aggravated weapons offense.

After a number of deaths were reported by the local media, police stated that “around 10” people had been killed but “could not be more specific” about the exact number.

The attack did not seem to have a “terror” motive, they also confirmed.

Around 12:33 local time (11:44 GMT), police received reports of a shooting at the adult education center Risbergska school. Other schools share the campus where the facility is located.

The majority of those who attend these centers are not yet primary or secondary school graduates.

Students were previously kept indoors “for security purposes” at a number of local schools.

Roberto Eid Forest, the head of Orebro police, issued a warning: “We don’t want members of the public to go there.”.

Alongside the prime minister, the justice minister expressed his sympathies to those impacted by the “tragedy” and assured the public that it would be safe to return to the nation’s schools on Wednesday.

“I’ve never witnessed a school shooting this large,” stated Gunnar Strommer.

According to local media, nearby hospitals had made room for patients by clearing out their intensive care units and emergency rooms.

According to Orebro University Hospital, its emergency room treated five patients who had been shot. “Minor injuries” were treated for a sixth individual who was not shot, according to the statement.

An update from the Orebro County municipality stated that no children were among those receiving treatment there.

Around ten gunshots were heard near her study, teacher Lena Warenmark told Swedish public radio station SVT.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Kristersson said that today is “a very painful day for all in Sweden” and that he is thinking of everyone who had a “normal school day” replaced “with terror.”.

“No one should have to go through the nightmare of being confined to a classroom while terrified for their life,” Kristersson wrote in a post on X.

Later, he urged people to allow police the liberty and room they require to carry out their duties and investigations, emphasizing that there were no additional dangers associated with going to school the following day.

In the next few days, police and the Swedish government will provide more details, Kristersson said.
