At least 13 people have been killed and another 32 injured in Russian shelling in Ukraine’s southern city of Zaporizhzhia, local officials say.
“The Russians cynically attacked the city in the middle of the day,” regional head Ivan Fedorov said, adding that two guided aerial bombs hit residential buildings.
President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In a video message from outside the bombed site, Fedorov said the Russian shelling began at about 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT) on Wednesday.
A day of mourning will be declared across the Zaporizhzhia region on Thursday.

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, urged allies to hold Russia accountable “for its terror.”. There has been no response from the Russian military. In February 2022, Ukrainian President Vladimir Putin began a full-scale invasion.
Fedorov said the Russian shelling started Wednesday at around 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT) in a video message from outside the bombed site.
Residential buildings were hit by two guided bombs, he claimed. He had earlier claimed that “industrial infrastructure” had been the target.
Online, graphic photos showed a stationary tram with broken windows, multiple burning cars, and first responders tending to victims on the side of the road.
One of the videos shows what appear to be casualties lying among debris and rubble on the road, and at least two minibuses with their windows blown out.
Near the front line is Zaporizhzhia.
“There is nothing more cruel than launching aerial bombs on a city, knowing that ordinary civilians will suffer,” President Zelensky said in a statement later on Wednesday.
Furthermore, he stated “that only through strength can such a war be ended with a lasting peace” and urged Ukraine’s allies to provide additional assistance.
Thursday will be designated as a day of mourning throughout the Zaporizhzhia region.
