Warhammer 40K unveils Boltgun 2, tactical RPG Dark Heresy, and, yes, a free typing game

Ars Technica

It’s been a busy day in the grimdark world of Warhammer 40K, thanks to its latest video game focused Warhammer Skulls showcase.
Not only have we learned a couple of classics getting a spruce-up, there’s brand-new stuff coming too, including a Boltgun sequel, new tactical RPG Dark Heresy, plus a smattering of fresh DLC.
Warhammer 40K: Boltgun 2, which seems as good a place as any to start, is exactly what it sounds like – a follow-up to developer Auroch Digital’s acclaimed 2023 retro shooter Boltgun.
Elsewhere in the gloomy world of Warhammer 40K, developer Owlcat has announced Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy, a “narrative-driven tactical RPG” set against the backdrop of the Noctis Aeterna and the mystery of the Tyrant Star.
All of which pretty much covers the big Warhammer 40K news, but it’s probably also worth mentioning there are currently significant discounts across a huge number of Warhammer games on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC as part of today’s Warhammer Day celebrations.

POSITIVE

Thanks to its most recent video game-focused Warhammer Skulls showcase, the grimdark world of Warhammer 40K has had a busy day. Along with a few classics getting a makeover, we also learned that brand-new content is on the horizon, such as a Boltgun sequel, the tactical role-playing game Dark Heresy, and a variety of new DLC.

It seems like a good place to start, and Warhammer 40K: Boltgun 2 is just that—a sequel to developer Auroch Digital’s highly regarded 2023 retro shooter Boltgun. While there aren’t many details available at the moment, the action will pick up right after the first game’s events and continue to feature classic first-person shooter action throughout its branching single-player campaign. New sites, “from the colossal heights of a hive city to the impenetrable mangrove swamps of a jungle,” as well as previously undiscovered enemies, such as the vicious Bloodletters and their demonic Juggernauts, are being discussed.

In 2026, all of that will be available on the Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. However, Boltgun fans have an additional, and more immediate, treat in the form of Boltgun: Words of Vengeance. Players must use their QWERTY skills to maximize carnage in this “first person typer” twist on the classic shooter, which is completely free to download on Steam right now.

The developer Owlcat has revealed Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy, a “narrative-driven tactical RPG” that takes place in the grim world of Warhammer 40K and is framed by the mystery of the Tyrant Star and the Noctis Aeterna. From devoted Imperial subjects, like a seasoned Guardsman from Catachan’s death world, to evil xenos, like a bird-like Kroot mercenary, “players will lead a warband of diverse companions in a desperate battle against heresy and corruption,” the studio explains. “.

Turn-based combat, “intricate investigations,” full voice acting, and “choices that carry grave consequences” are all mentioned as ways to expand on the concepts presented in Owlcat’s Rogue Trader. If that sounds exciting, Dark Heresy will be available on the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC (through Steam, GOG, and Epic) at an as-yet-unspecified later date.

Regarding Rogue Trader, Owlcat has also revealed that the second expansion for the game, Lex Imperialis, will be available on June 24. Throughout its fifteen-hour plot, this presents a group of “incorruptible enforcers” known as the Adeptus Arbites as well as a new character named Solomorne Anthar. Furthermore, the studio has disclosed that it is developing a second season pass for Rogue Trader, which will include two additional 15-hour expansions with new quests and a new companion in addition to an appearance customization pack. Players will come across ancient guardians and find artifacts connected to the Von Valancius legacy in the first of these expansions, which transports them to a Necron vault curated by Trazyn the Infinite. It promises a “descent into madness and mystery” as players explore a “surreal” voidship graveyard in the second new expansion.

While we’re talking about DLC, there’s one more thing to talk about: the new Siege mode in Space Marine 2. In this “endless” PvE mode for the well-known shooter, three players must defend an Imperial stronghold while surviving increasingly deadly waves of Tyranid and Chaos on Kadaku. Beginning on June 4th, it will be playable on Steam through the Public Test Server of developer Saber Interactive. On June 26th, it will be fully released on all platforms as part of a free update.

That pretty much covers the major Warhammer 40K news, but it’s also probably worth mentioning that, in honor of today’s Warhammer Day, there are currently huge discounts available on a ton of Warhammer games on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
