The undocumented father shot and killed by an ICE agent in Franklin Park, Illinois, only had a history of minor traffic violations, not a criminal record, according to his attorney.
They said he was a criminal who was in the country illegally, but his attorney Manuel Carednas said that’s not entirely true.
DHS says an ICE agent was trying to arrest him when he resisted and attempted to drive his car into agents.
Cardenas said Villegas-Gonzalez was respectful, hardworking and willing to comply with what the court required.
If he had to pay a fine or he had to do anything the court required, he was very compliant,” said Cardenas.
In Franklin Park, Illinois, an ICE agent shot and killed an undocumented father who, according to his lawyer, had no criminal record and only a history of minor traffic infractions.
Homeland Security’s Department and the U.S. S. . Silvero Villegas-Gonzalez was the target of an arrest request from Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday. Manuel Carednas, his lawyer, disputed the claims that he was a criminal who was in the country illegally.
Following his death on Friday, Villegas-Gonzalez’s family posted a picture of him to a GoFundMe page, stating that he had just dropped off his two sons at school that morning. He resisted and tried to collide with ICE agents while they were attempting to arrest him, according to DHS. DHS reported that Villegas-Gonzalez was shot and killed by an agent at that point.
“First and foremost, I was upset when I realized it was our client,” Cardenas said. “I didn’t think it fit the person I knew.”. “..”.
According to CBS News Chicago investigators, the 38-year-old father had four traffic infractions from 2010 to 2019 for things like speeding, driving without a license, not having insurance, and failing to use a child seat system.
“I represented Villegas-Gonzales in two of those cases,” Cardenas said.
He stated, “Neither of them involved criminal violence, and both of them were resolved favorably.”.
Villegas-Gonzalez entered the country with a criminal record of reckless driving, according to Homeland Security. S. . at an unspecified time and date. According to President Trump, anybody in the U. S. Being illegal is a crime.
Cardenas is not in agreement.
“Despite his lack of documentation, he was abiding by all the laws. The lawyer stated that he was at work.
Villegas-Gonzalez, according to Cardenas, was polite, diligent, and prepared to follow the court’s orders.
“He would appear in court if it were necessary. “He was very compliant if he had to pay a fine or do anything the court required,” Cardenas said.
In order to stop another person from dying during a traffic stop, Cardenas stated that he wants to see a thorough investigation into what transpired in Franklin Park.
Uncertainty surrounds whether body camera footage of this incident exists, and not all federal agents are mandated to wear them.
The Chicago Field Office of the FBI confirmed that it has been notified of the circumstances and is assisting with the investigation.
