Two more tornadoes have been confirmed in West Michigan after a series of severe storms

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The National Weather Service has confirmed two more tornadoes from the powerful line of storms that swept across Michigan late last week, bringing the total number of twisters to 11.
The two latest confirmed tornadoes happened in Ottawa and Barry counties, the NWS Grand Rapids team said Monday, May 19.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Eleven tornadoes have been confirmed by the National Weather Service, including two more from the strong line of storms that swept across Michigan late last week.

The NWS Grand Rapids team reported on Monday, May 19, that the two most recent confirmed tornadoes occurred in Barry and Ottawa counties. Despite having low Fujita strength ratings, the twisters nevertheless caused damage to a number of houses, farm structures, and lake docks.

In both twisters, no injuries were reported.

During Thursday night, May 15, and into the early hours of Friday morning, Michigan was rocked by severe thunderstorms for several hours. As of Monday evening, more than 7,000 residents were still without power, demonstrating the extent of the damage. To restore power, Consumers Energy crews are working hard.

What the NWS said on Monday regarding the two most recent confirmed tornadoes is as follows.

At 10:50 p.m., an EF-1 tornado made landfall in Barry County near Gun Lake. A. and saw winds of up to 100 miles per hour at their highest. After traveling northeast across the southernmost portion of Gun Lake, the twister came to an end close to the Otis Sanctuary. Many homes had minor damage from falling trees during the storm, but the majority of the damage along the tornado’s path was reported to be to trees. According to NWS, “one that had multiple sections lifted and thrown well into the lake” was among the numerous severely damaged docks in Gun Lake.

EF-0 tornado in Ottawa County At 10:24 p.m., a short tornado with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph made landfall in Zeeland Township. M. The NWS said Thursday. The twister damaged a number of farm buildings and trees along its course before coming to an end in Jamestown Township.

A local state of emergency was proclaimed in both Kalamazoo and Allegan counties as a result of the storm’s damage and power outages. The declaration can speed up emergency response efforts and provide officials with access to more resources.

There are typically 13 tornadoes in Michigan each year. By the end of May of last year, the state had broken that record.
