Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke over the phone for the first time on Monday, but despite growing pressure from Washington, the Kremlin would not accept a ceasefire.
After the two-hour call, Putin told reporters in Sochi that it was “very meaningful and frank” and that he was ready to collaborate with Ukraine on a memorandum for upcoming peace negotiations.
But the Russian leader refused to support the proposed unconditional ceasefire for 30 days, which US officials had stated was the call’s primary goal.
Though he maintained that it was vital to “develop the most effective paths toward peace,” Putin asserted that Russia supported a halt to hostilities.
Putin, crucially, reiterated his long-standing insistence that the “root causes” of the conflict must be addressed, alluding to Russia’s maximalist demands that would threaten Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The Supreme Court gives Trump permission to remove Venezuelans’ protection from deportation.
As reported by Reuters, the Trump administration has been permitted by the Supreme Court to deprive approximately 350,000 Venezuelans residing in the United States of the temporary protected status granted by Joe Biden.
Home Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s decision to end the deportation protection granted to Venezuelans under the temporary protected status, or TPS, program was halted by an order from US District Judge Edward Chen, located in San Francisco. The justice department requested that the court lift this order.
The National TPS Alliance advocacy group and some TPS recipients filed a lawsuit against Chen, claiming that Venezuela is still a dangerous place.
Under US law, the TPS program grants humanitarian designations to nations affected by natural disasters, war, or other calamities. These designations grant work permits and deportation protection to recipients who are currently residing in the United States. The Interior Secretary has the authority to extend the designation.
Venezuela was twice designated for TPS by the Biden administration in 2021 and 2023. A few days prior to Trump’s return to office in January, the Biden administration declared that the programs would be extended through 2026.
For some Venezuelans who benefited from the 2023 designation, Noem moved to terminate the TPS designation and revoked the extension. According to the DOHS, approximately 348,202 Venezuelans were registered under that designation in 2023.
Chen decided that Noem had broken a federal law that regulates agency behavior. The judge added that the revocation of the TPS status seemed to have been based on “negative stereotypes,” which implied that the migrants from Venezuela were criminals. He wrote:.
There is no basis for extrapolating criminality to the entire Venezuelan TPS population; this is blatant racism based on broad, unfounded stereotypes.
The judge also noted that Venezuelan TPS holders were less likely to commit crimes than the US population as a whole and more likely to have bachelor’s degrees than US citizens.
On April 18, the administration asked the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco to halt the judge’s order, but the court denied their request.
In a Supreme Court filing, Justice Department attorneys claimed that Chen had “wrested control of the nation’s immigration policy” from the Trump-led executive branch of the government. They wrote:.
The court’s ruling violates core Executive Branch authority and unnecessarily postpones delicate policy decisions in a field of immigration law that Congress acknowledged needs to be adaptable, quick, and discretionary.
Granting the administration’s request, the plaintiffs told the Supreme Court, “would strip work authorization from nearly 350,000 people living in the US, expose them to deportation to an unsafe country, and cost billions in economic losses nationwide.”.
Additionally, the Trump administration ended TPS for thousands of Cameroonians and Afghans in the United States in April. In the present case, those actions are not relevant.
