Trump won the case at the expense of immigrants from Venezuela.
Vox’s senior politics and ideas editor is Patrick Reis. Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, Politico, the National Journal, and Seattle’s Real Change News were among his previous employers. Campaign politics, economic policy, the federal death penalty, climate change, financial regulation, and homelessness are among the topics he has covered as a reporter and editor.
Greetings from The Logoff: Today, the Supreme Court decided that the Trump administration could deny deportation protections to almost 350,000 Venezuelans residing in the United States. This is a win for President Donald Trump, but it comes at the expense of hundreds of thousands of other vulnerable individuals.
For example, many Venezuelan immigrants have been granted Temporary Protected Status since 2021, which permits them to remain and work in the United States in the event of a natural disaster or civil unrest in their home countries. The economic mismanagement of an authoritarian regime and international sanctions have resulted in Venezuela’s ongoing humanitarian crisis. However, the Trump administration tried to remove that status for about 350,000 Venezuelans after taking office. While lawsuits were pending, a federal judge in March put a halt to the administration’s initiative.
The Supreme Court reversed the lower court’s freeze, allowing deportations to proceed even though the cases are still pending. What’s new?
What comes next? The court’s ruling permits individual immigrants to contest their deportations or the loss of their work permits, but it also gives the administration the freedom to start deporting Venezuelans who were previously protected by the status. Additionally, later this year, Trump plans to deny hundreds of thousands of other immigrants their Temporary Protected Status.

What does this mean for the immigrants? Human Rights Watch reports that over 20 million people in Venezuela lack proper access to food and medical care, and that deportations would mean returning to a nation where there is a lack of work but not suffering. Venezuela is still experiencing a humanitarian crisis.
How does this affect the balance of power? Federal judges have frequently restrained Trump’s authority by halting his actions while they are being reviewed by the courts. Such freezes have infuriated Trump and his administration, who claim that they give individual judges excessive authority over the president. Another check on the power of this administration was weakened today when the court sided with the White House.
Therefore, it’s time to log off.
For no particular reason, here is a fantastic old Washington Post article about how Haitian immigrants saved a town in North Carolina from financial ruin. I can’t help but listen to Vox’s Unexplainable podcast’s episode titled “The man who walked butterflies on a leash” if you’re looking for something completely unrelated to politics. You can listen to it on Spotify and Apple. I sincerely appreciate you reading, and I hope to see you again tomorrow.
