After defeating Kentucky, the Mountaineers move on to the Super Regionals.
CLEMSON SdotC. After defeating Kentucky 13–12 on Sunday night in the Clemson Regional Final at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, the West Virginia University baseball team advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the second consecutive season.
By dominating the regional, the Mountaineers extended their program record for wins and improved to 44-14 on the season. West Virginia will either be at No. 1 or go to the super regionals the following week. 6 LSU or Little Rock at home. On Monday, the Tigers will play the Trojans in Game 7.
In Sunday’s intense back-and-forth game against Kentucky, the Mountaineers took the lead with two six-run innings, including one in the eighth. Redshirt senior Griffin Kirn earned his first save of the season by closing out the victory two days after throwing 7 points in 1 inning against the Wildcats in the opener.
After going 8 for 12 over the weekend with six RBI, including four hits and three RBI on Sunday night, sophomore Armani Guzman was named the Regional MVP. Gavin Kelly, a freshman, drove in three runs, junior Logan Sauve hit a home run and had two RBI, and junior Ben Lumsden had two hits and four RBI.
Sauve, Kirn, Guzman, and senior Brodie Kresser all qualified for the Regional All-Tournament Team.
Benjamin Hudson, a freshman, earned his third victory of the season as the Mountaineers used eight pitchers that evening. During his scoreless ninth-inning inning, Kirn recorded his 100th strikeout of the season. In a scoreless seventh inning, junior Cole Fehrman recorded three strikeouts, completing another strong outing.
With his eighth home run of the year, Sauve put the Mountaineers ahead in the first. Sauve has hit a home run in regional play for the third consecutive season.
After a strong comeback, Kentucky took a 6-1 lead with four points in the second, one in the third, and one in the fourth.
Six runs were scored by the Mountaineers in the bottom of the fourth. Before Lumsden singled in two runs, Kelly drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. After Guzman hit two more home runs to tie the score, Sauve grounded out to give WVU the victory.
As the Wildcats scored two goals in the fifth, three in the sixth, and one in the eighth to take a 12–7 lead, the lead did not last.
The Mountaineers persevered and scored six runs in the eighth inning with two outs, just like they had done all weekend. The first run was scored by a bases-loaded walk to junior Sam White, and then Kelly singled to score two. Guzman singled to put WVU ahead by one run after Lumsden followed with a two-run single to tie the game.
Kirn forced a flyout that ended up in center fielder Skylar King’s glove to win the regional championship, and the Wildcats only managed a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth.
