In Google Photos v7.3, we’ve spotted clues that indicate the app could soon help identify whether an image is AI-generated.

These days, one of the most common applications of AI is in image generation. It’s obvious that a lot of images these days include artificial intelligence (AI), whether it’s for editing pre-existing ones or for creating realistic ones from scratch. It gets harder and harder to distinguish a real image from one that has been artificially generated or altered as a result of this growing use case. Google is preparing to display information that would help identify AI images, so Google Photos might soon be able to assist you in this capacity.

Based on work-in-progress code, an APK teardown assists in forecasting features that might be added to a service in the future. Such anticipated features might not, nevertheless, be released to the general public.
There are hints in Google Photos v7.3 that suggest the app may soon be able to tell if a picture was created using artificial intelligence. The following XML code can be found in one of the new layout files in this version.

The image’s credit tag may be visible via the “@id/credit” ID resource. An instance of this would be a “Made with Google AI” credit tag that appears in the EXIF data of an AI-generated image, such as those produced by Google Gemini. A few of its own tags, such as “AI-Generated with Google Photos” and “AI-Generated with Google,” are even added by Google Photos when you use Magic Editor.
The Digital Source Type field, which identifies the media source from which the digital image was created, may be referred to by the “@id/digital_source_type” ID resource. We also noticed a mention of the value “compositeWithTrainedAlgorithmicMedia,” which is used by Google Photos to indicate when an image has been improved or corrected by a Generative AI model.
Uncertainty surrounds the possible meaning of the “@id/ai_info” ID resource. In theory, it might be able to identify the AI or model that produced the image.
It is likely that the image details section will display all of the previously mentioned data. It will be simple to determine whether an image is artificial intelligence (AI)-generated if the IPTC metadata is displayed.
Google Photos has not yet rolled out this update. Still, we believe the feature will be available sooner rather than later, considering how quickly AI-generated images are becoming a part of our daily lives.
