Bloomberg reports that Apple is reportedly stepping up its talks with OpenAI ahead of the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, where AI is expected to be a major talking point.

Apple has been in talks with a number of major AI firms in an attempt to form a possible alliance for on-device chatbot capabilities, as Mashable has previously reported. Apple and OpenAI reportedly discussed a possible partnership earlier this year, according to Bloomberg. Those with knowledge of the situation say that those discussions have since resumed. The potential agreement might concern iOS 18’s OpenAI integrations.

As of right now, though, no agreement has been made. Apple looks to be considering whether to collaborate with another business to integrate chatbot functionality into its products. Additionally, Apple and Google are in discussions regarding the iPhone version of Google’s Gemini.

Recent studies suggest that Apple is also developing an AI update for Siri. Apple scientists are developing a model that would be able to comprehend a device’s background and on-screen content more contextually than ChatGPT can, as Mashable’s Cecily Mauran reported. Additionally, it would comprehend the context of the conversation better. This would all happen on-device, which would be a change from large language models (LLMs), which are currently cloud-based and demand a lot of processing power.

We might not find out what Apple has planned until WWDC.
