Following adding the functionality for new app installs earlier this year, the Google Play Store is once rolling out support for downloading multiple Android app updates at the same time.
Downloading apps can sometimes feel a bit tedious on Android because, for years now, the Play Store has had to do this one at a time.
It only worked for new app installs.
We’re seeing simultaneous app update downloads working in the Google Play Store today across multiple devices, and a few of our readers are seeing the same behavior this week as well.
It’s unclear if this is a server-side change on Google’s part or an update to the Play Store itself, but the functionality is much appreciated.
As far as we can tell, you can download up to three app updates at once through the Play Store.
The apps will start to download, with only anything beyond three showing the “Pending” status that we’re all so used to seeing in the Play Store.
This matches the App Store on iOS which can also download up to three apps at once.
The same limit of three also now applies to new app installs, which was previously limited to two at a time.
More on Android: Google Play Store requesting location permission to show ‘local recommendations’ Sideloading Android apps requires extra step after APK change by Google Play What’s new in the August 2024 Google System Updates Thanks Gem, Dylan, and Wael!
The Google Play Store is now offering the ability to download multiple Android app updates simultaneously, which it added earlier this year along with the ability to install new apps.
Due to the Play Store’s ongoing requirement to download apps one at a time, downloading apps on Android can occasionally feel a little laborious. The app that came after wouldn’t begin downloading until the installation and download were finished. If you are going through a lengthy list of updates, that could be very inconvenient.
Google began rolling out the feature of multi-app downloads earlier this year. As we previously mentioned in April, there was a catch to the functionality, even though it was fairly widely available.
For new app installs only, it functioned.
For a brief period in April, some users were able to download updates simultaneously for their apps; however, after a few days, most users who had access to this feature lost it.
A few of our readers are reporting the same behavior this week as well. We are seeing simultaneous app update downloads functioning in the Google Play Store today across multiple devices. The feature is greatly appreciated, though it’s unclear if this is a Google server-side modification or an update to the Play Store itself.
To the best of our knowledge, the Play Store allows you to simultaneously download up to three app updates. As soon as three apps have been downloaded, the Play Store’s familiar “Pending” status will appear on all other apps. This is similar to the iOS App Store, which supports downloading up to three apps simultaneously.
Previously only two new app installs could be made at a time, but now there is a three-app limit.
Additional information about Android:.
In order to display “local recommendations,” Google Play Store requests location permission.
Android app sideloading necessitates an additional step following Google Play’s APK modification.
