POSITIVE

What just happened? AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D was released yesterday, and it’s already quite popular, maybe too much so. The superb CPU is nearly sold out in the US and Europe, which has caused scalpers to charge nearly $1,500 for the $480 processor.

Customers dissatisfied with AMD’s lackluster Zen 5 chips and Intel’s Arrow Lake processors, which we gave low ratings, were excited by the arrival of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. In contrast, Team Red’s new chip was named The New Gaming CPU King in our review. Finding one at the moment is like trying to obtain a graphics card in 2021, as expected given all the accolades.

AMD’s latest processor is currently listed as sold out at Newegg, Best Buy, Amazon, BandH Photo, Walmart, and the majority of Micro Center locations.

In Europe, the situation is identical. 3DCenter reported on X that the majority of Germany’s major retailers of computer hardware were frequently sold out of Ryzen 7 9800X3D chips before their delivery had even arrived. Because of this, Mindfactory stopped taking pre-orders.

Around the end of the month, Scan and Overclockers UK will be receiving the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which is currently out of stock in the UK. In addition, other merchants display the chip as sold out and pending delivery.

There are numerous listings for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on eBay with exorbitant prices, as we have seen countless times before when a product’s demand greatly exceeds its supply.

For the CPU, the most avaricious scalper is asking $1,500, which is 212 percent more than its MSRP. Listings priced between $645 and $999 come next, with the great majority of these being confirmed pre-orders that haven’t arrived at the sellers’ location yet.

In order to achieve higher clock speeds and lower operating temperatures, the 9800X3D places the large 64MB L3 cache beneath the cores instead of on top, as was the case with earlier models.

The chip’s gaming performance is outstanding; it beats the Core Ultra 9 285K by 33 percent and Intel’s 14900K by an astounding 27 percent. You probably shouldn’t pay eBay prices for one, but we thought it was excellent value even at $480 MSRP.
