ASUS has posted high-res die shots of the GeForce RTX 5090’s Blackwell GB202 GPU, the GDDR7 memory & also some fantastic overclocked results by pushing its Astral flagship over 3 GHz.
ASUS GeForce RTX 5090 Astral Overclocked With LN2 Over 3 GHz, Results In Almost 1000W Power Consumption ASUS’s China manager, Tony Yu, managed to take the flagship ROG GeForce RTX 5090 Astral GPU for a spin with LN2 cooling and achieved some surprisingly good figures.
The following is how these results compare to the numbers from our review of the RTX 5090: In terms of performance improvement, the ASUS GeForce RTX 5090 ROG Astral overclocked GPU achieved a 25% uplift in 3DMark Port Royal, an 18% uplift in Time Spy Extreme, and a 12% uplift in FireStrike Ultra.
The NVIDIA Blackwell GB202 GPU measures 922mm2, a 21% increase in die size on the same node.
This is a substantially bigger die and explains why NVIDIA is charging a $2000 US premium for RTX 5090 graphics cards.

High-resolution images of the GeForce RTX 5090’s Blackwell GB202 GPU, GDDR7 memory, and some amazing overclocked results by pushing its Astral flagship over 3 GHz have been posted by ASUS.

The ASUS GeForce RTX 5090 Astral overclocks with LN2 at frequencies higher than 3 GHz, consuming nearly 1000W of power.

Tony Yu, the China manager for ASUS, was able to test the flagship ROG GeForce RTX 5090 Astral GPU with LN2 cooling and came up with some unexpectedly impressive results.

By using LN2, the best cooling type for extreme overclocks, Tony was able to exceed the stock frequency rating of 28 Gbps by 21 percent and reach a maximum GPU frequency of 3390 MHz and a memory frequency of 34 Gbps. Both of these numbers are impressive, and once professionals begin to release their records, we can anticipate even higher overclock.

The 3DMark Time Spy Extreme, Fire Strike Ultra, Port Royal, and Wild Life Extreme benchmarks were used to test the graphics card’s performance. The comparison between these findings and the figures from our evaluation of the RTX 5090 is as follows.

Performance-wise, the ASUS GeForce RTX 5090 ROG Astral overclocked GPU enhanced 3DMark Port Royal by 25%, Time Spy Extreme by 18%, and FireStrike Ultra by 12%. Although this is a good improvement, it should be noted that the system’s power was nearly 1800W, and the card itself was using about 1000W of power. Additionally, the boost clock was increased by 41% to 3-4 GHz, which is nearly 1 GHz higher than the stock NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090.

According to what we currently know, the NVIDIA RTX Blackwell Gaming GPUs are built on TSMC’s 4nm process node, have a 92 billion transistor capacity with 4000 AI TOPS, 380 RT TFLOPs, a 125 TFLOPS of FP32 computation, the fastest GDDR7 memory interface with a bandwidth of up to 128 TB/s, and a brand-new Founders Edition.

Additionally, GDDR7 offers a much-needed improvement over GDDR6/X memory by providing twice the bandwidth and data rate of G6 memory at a lower wattage and higher frequency. From an engineering perspective, the PCB materials used on RTX 50 GPUs are of the highest caliber, and GDDR7 also supports PAM4 signaling.

The die size of the NVIDIA Blackwell GB202 GPU has increased by 21% on the same node, measuring 922mm2. NVIDIA charges a $2000 US premium for RTX 5090 graphics cards, which makes sense given that this is a much larger die. NVIDIA still has room to develop a Titan or Ti variant, and although we would certainly like to see one, we are unable to predict whether a higher-end version will be available because that did not occur with the RTX 4090. However, the possibility of a workstation variant with a larger core configuration and more memory is still open.
