SpaceX’s Starship megarocket will start flying Mars missions just two years from now, if all goes according to plan.
“These will be uncrewed to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars.
“Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years,” Musk added in the same post.
The stainless-steel Starship consists of two elements: a first-stage booster called Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall (50 meters) upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship.
Indeed, SpaceX plans to land Super Heavy back on the launch mount after each liftoff, enabling quick inspection, refurbishment and relaunch.
SpaceX believes that Starship’s combination of brawn and efficiency will finally bring Mars settlement — a long-held dream of Musk’s — within humanity’s grasp.

The 165-foot-tall (50-meter) upper-stage spacecraft known as Starship and the first-stage booster Super Heavy make up the stainless-steel Starship.
A starship that is stacked is the largest and most potent rocket ever constructed. About twice as powerful as NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS), the rocket for the Artemis moon program, it is approximately 400 feet (122 meters) tall and produces 16.7 million pounds of thrust at liftoff.
Starship is intended to be fully and quickly reusable, whereas SLS is disposable. In fact, following every liftoff, SpaceX intends to return Super Heavy to the launch mount for a speedy inspection, refurbishment, and relaunch.
Musk has long dreamed of bringing human settlement on Mars, and SpaceX thinks that Starship’s combination of power and efficiency will finally make it possible.

Starship hasn’t operated at full capacity yet. So far, it has conducted four test flights: in March and June of this year, as well as in April and November of 2023. With each subsequent flight, the massive vehicle has outperformed itself, and on its most recent mission, it achieved all of its primary goals.
In preparation for what could be a very short wait, SpaceX has already conducted test flights with both the Super Heavy and the Starship that will carry out the mission.
The inaugural attempt to land Super Heavy back on the launch mount, which will require the use of the launch tower’s “chopstick” arms, will be the focus of flight five’s exciting new action. Excitation is assured, as Musk frequently states regarding Starship journeys.
