Drop, drip, drip. Over the weekend, unverified pictures of a retail-model left Joy-Con for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 surfaced online, continuing the trend of leaks. After scouring the images, fans think they have also uncovered a surprise feature for the new Joy-Cons: mouse functionality.
Over the weekend, three brand-new Switch 2 Joy-Con pictures appeared on Reddit. They purportedly came from a Chinese factory and showed a black controller with a light-blue interior. According to VGC, watchful fans think they have spotted an optical sensor on the Joy-Con’s side. In this case, the controller could serve as a PC mouse, providing a new way to play Switch 2 games. According to another Reddit post, the Switch 2’s shipping data also suggests mouse-like functionality.
The Switch 2 wouldn’t be the first handheld gaming device with mouse-like functionality if that were the case. The Lenovo Legion Go features detachable controllers, similar to the Switch, and the appropriate gamepad can be used as a mouse.
A report surfaced last month asserting that the Switch 2 will be the actual name of Nintendo’s next system. It appears that the hybrid system will also make use of magnetic Joy-Cons, which were previously speculated to be a feature of the console. Nintendo is expected to reveal the Switch successor before the end of March, though the exact date is unknown.
Switch sold 46.6 million units in the US last month, making it the second-best-selling system in the country’s overall history. After Circana data for November arrived, the console overtook the PS2. Nonetheless, the Nintendo DS continues to be the best.
