Japan’s ruling party and main opposition have agreed to form an alliance, paving the way for Sanae Takaichito become the Asian nation’s first female Prime Minister, local media reported on Sunday.
Takaichi’s derailed bid for prime minister Takaichi took the reins of the conservative LDP earlier this month after winning the party’s presidency.
However, her chances to become Japan’s premier were set off courseafter her ruling coalition came crumbling down with LDP’s junior partner, the Komeito party, leaving after 26 years.
The collapse of the coalition had pushed Japan into political turmoil as a fragmented opposition made an unsuccessful bid to topple the LDP.
Ishin lawmakers will vote for Takaichi in an election to pick the prime minister in parliament on Tuesday, Kyodo reported.

Sanae Takaichito will become the first female prime minister of Japan after the main opposition and ruling party agreed to form an alliance, according to local media on Sunday.

Alongside Hirofumi is Takaichi, the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

According to unnamed senior officials from both parties, the Kyodo news agency said that Yoshimura, the leader of the smaller, right-leaning Japan Innovation Party, also known as Ishin, is scheduled to sign a coalition agreement on Monday.

The prime ministerial bid of Takaichi was unsuccessful.

Takaichi won the party’s presidency earlier this month and assumed leadership of the conservative LDP.

But when her ruling coalition collapsed and the Komeito party, the LDP’s junior partner, left after 26 years, her chances of becoming Japan’s premier were dashed.

With a disjointed opposition making an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the LDP, the coalition’s collapse had plunged Japan into political unrest.

Since then, the LDP has made an effort to find a new alliance.

According to Kyodo, Ishin lawmakers will select Takaichi as the prime minister in a parliamentary election on Tuesday.

According to the news agency, the party has no immediate plans to send ministers to Takaichi’s cabinet.
