That the UNC Director of Athletics, Bubba Cunningham, and Belichick, had to make public comments speaks to the degree of discussion that took place.
“I’m fully committed to UNC Football and the program we’re building here,” Belichick said in a post by the school’s X handle, @GoHeels.
“Coach Belichick has the full support of the Department of Athletics and University,” said Cunningham.
The Tar Heels are in a bye week and next play October 17 at California.
And if Davis’ playful jabs are any indication, this season, the Tar Heels could be loud in all the right ways.
In statements issued Wednesday night, North Carolina and football coach Bill Belichick expressed solidarity in their resolve to stick with the program in the face of a wave of criticism that has mostly emerged over the past three days.
Many reports about issues in the program have surfaced since the Tar Heels’ 38-10 loss to Clemson at Kenan Stadium on Saturday; some of these were initially reported by TarHeel247.
These included a number of sourced materials, such as the university’s power structure sifting through data to decide on a potential course of action, including whether to keep Belichick as head coach.
.
The level of discussion that occurred is evidenced by the fact that Belichick and Bubba Cunningham, the UNC Director of Athletics, were forced to make public remarks.
Belichick stated, “I’m fully committed to UNC Football and the program we’re building here,” in a post published by @GoHeels, the school’s X handle.
.
“The Department of Athletics and University fully supports Coach Belichick,” Cunningham stated.
UNC is currently 0-1 in the ACC and 2-3 overall. In almost every offensive and defensive metric, the Tar Heels are in the bottom half of the country and have lost to three Power 4 conference opponents 120-33.
.
Since last spring, rumors about Belichick’s private life have remained largely the same. Furthermore, a flurry of internal items have surfaced recently, such as the program’s X handle refraining from tweeting about former quarterback Drake Maye because he is a member of the New England Patriots, Belichick’s former employer for the majority of the century and with whom he has a known feud.
The Tar Heels will play at California on October 17 after taking a week off.

CHAPEL HILL — Hubert Davis left the ACC Tipoff podium after concluding his Q&A session on Tuesday, but he was gone for a short while.
It was Seth Trimble next.
Davis exclaimed, “Let’s go, Seth,” with a lighthearted smile on his face and a mock-serious demeanor.
Davis lingered as Trimble walked up to the microphone. He leaned in the direction of the microphone.
He jokingly said, “Ask him about Ben & Jerry’s,” which made Trimble smile and the audience laugh.
It appeared as though Davis had finally found his way to his seat. Prior to taking a seat, he glanced back at the podium.
In reference to the ice cream shop that Trimble recently acquired, he stated, “If you need dairy-free options, there are no options there.”. He then approached Trimble and gave him a playful slap across the chest while grinning.
With a laugh, Trimble retorted, “You are lying to all these people,”. You’re all being misled by him. Don’t trust him. In reality, he hasn’t been. “,”.
Davis let out a loud laugh that has become his trademark. As it happened, Henri Veesaar, the new transfer center, watched from the sidelines, grinning broadly in amusement.
Even though it appeared to be a brief, trivial, and silly moment, it conveyed a lot.
The loose, lighthearted, and sincere moments like that highlight how different the North Carolina team feels this year. Last year’s squad was “quiet,” according to Davis. Already, the 2025–26 Tar Heels are more connected, louder, and looser. This chemistry is becoming a defining characteristic of this group’s interactions on and off the court, not just when they appear in the media.
They’re fiery and very talkative. Seeing and hearing that, as well as coaching it, has been enjoyable,” Davis remarked. “A team is well-connected when there are vocal players on both ends of the floor. During practice, I enjoy hearing the voices and the noise. “.”.
It’s not just on the court. The players have developed a strong bond with each other. Just arrived in Chapel Hill in August is Luka Bogavac. In addition to playing basketball, 13 is spending time with his teammates and getting to know them better.
While attempting to acclimate the Montenegrin native to American culture, Trimble said he has enjoyed spending time with Bogavac. Bogavac was “unintentionally funny,” according to Trimble. “..”.
“A song he was playing that no one would believe he knew. We are all merely hyping him up while he sits there grinning and bopping his head. “..”.
According to Derek Dixon, a freshman, he spends a lot of time out and about with his fellow freshmen Caleb Wilson and Ivan Matlekovic.
“Ivan is a genuine comedian. He doesn’t say much, but he’s always willing to go wherever Caleb and I go,” Dixon remarked. “We simply call him, knock on his door, and he answers. Getting to know him and his various worldviews has been a great experience. I’ve had so much fun. “.
Davis has a well-known rule that he uses to try to connect with his players. At least once a week, he demands that every team member visit his office to simply talk about anything unrelated to basketball, such as life, advice, school, or anything else on their minds.
Though Veesaar hasn’t done it much, he is growing accustomed to it and already cherishes his time in Davis’ office.
“He treats you as an equal when you enter his office, away from the court. He will make fun of you if you make fun of him. We merely poke fun at one another. Simply put, it’s a wonderful relationship. You establish trust that extends to the court. “.
The team’s camaraderie gives them an advantage as the season draws near, even though it won’t make it any easier to put the ball in the basket. Additionally, the Tar Heels could be loud in all the right ways this season if Davis’ lighthearted remarks are any guide. It will only be known in time.
