Google Cloud experienced outages today that led to disruptions for many online services.
Reports of issues for Google products and others began around 2 PM ET.
Google Cloud products that rely on the affected infrastructure are seeing recovery in multiple locations.
Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, Etsy, UPS and OpenAI all experienced a high volume of reports on DownDetector, with some informing users of disruptions.
However, as of 7:13PM ET, the company noted that several Google Cloud components were still experiencing “residual impact.”
There were outages on Google Cloud today, which caused numerous online services to be interrupted. Concerns about Google products and other products started to be reported at 2:00 PM ET. The business was successful in getting its own apps back up and running, but some users have been having issues with a number of other companies.
“We have determined the underlying cause and implemented the necessary remedies,” Google stated in an update at 4:16 PM ET. Everywhere but US-Central1 has seen a recovery in our infrastructure. Recovery is underway in several places for Google Cloud products that depend on the impacted infrastructure. Our engineers are actively working on full recovery and are aware that customers are still having problems with us-central1 and multi-region/us. Numerous reports on DownDetector were received by Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, Etsy, UPS, and OpenAI, some of which alerted users to disruptions. There were problems with Pokemon Go and the Pokemon Trading Card Game as well. On its help page, Snapchat acknowledged the persistent problems. According to a post by OpenAI, “issues affecting multiple external internet providers” may cause users to experience difficulties logging in. “During the outage, AWS also received more reports on DownDetector than usual. However, Amazon clarified in a statement to Engadget that it has no general service problems and that its AWS Health Dashboard is a better indicator of its current status than DownDetector.”.
The majority of services are now operating normally again. The main Spotify page loaded for our editors by 5 PM ET, and DownDetector outage reports had returned to near their baseline. For us, other apps like Discord and Snapchat also appeared to be operating normally. At the time, Google stated that it anticipated the recovery to be finished “in less than an hour” and that its products would be returning to the internet in a number of regions. But as of 7:13 PM ET, the business reported that “residual impact” was still being felt by a number of Google Cloud components. There is still some impact on Google Cloud Dataflow, Vertex AI Online Prediction, and Personalized Service Health, and the company has not given an estimated time of return.
