The Cowboys recruit an offensive coordinator who is skilled in OL and run-game strategies

Cowboys Wire

It may have been touch and go for a bit, but Dallas officially hired the last of the big three coordinators for new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimers’ staff.
On Friday, a week after Schotty’s hire was announced, the team agreed to terms with Klayton Adams as the team’s offensive coordinator.
Adams had been the offensive line coach in Arizona for the past two seasons under head coach Jonathan Gannon.
This will be the first time Adams will hold the offensive coordinator position in the NFL which began in 2019 as an assistant offensive line coach under then-Colts head coach Frank Reich.
He went on to coach at West Washington University in 2007 as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator.

Dallas officially hired the final of the three coordinators for the new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimers’ staff, despite it being touch and go for a while. Klayton Adams was hired by the team as offensive coordinator on Friday, one week after Schotty’s hiring was made public.

For the previous two seasons, Adams had served as Arizona’s offensive line coach under head coach Jonathan Gannon.

Adams, who started as an assistant offensive line coach in 2019 under then-Colts head coach Frank Reich, will be the first offensive coordinator in NFL history.

Before leaving the Colts in 2021, the Cowboys’ new offensive coordinator worked with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus for three seasons in Indianapolis.

Known for his run-play schemes, Adams transformed Arizona’s rushing offense from mediocre to a top-10 one. This season, the Cardinals were eighth in rushing touchdowns and seventh in rushing yards per game. With an average of 5 points per carry, Arizona was ranked second in the NFL, only behind Baltimore, which averaged 5 points per attempt.

Dallas has made it clear that they are looking for a running game star, and Adams’ qualifications make him a strong candidate for the role. Adams will serve as offensive coordinator, but Schottenheimer is expected to call offensive plays, following the hierarchy in place when Mike McCarthy was the Cowboys’ head coach.

Dallas has a reputation for having more attention than most other NFL cities, but Adams might have an advantage over other new Cowboys coaches. He earned a communications degree with a journalism concentration from Boise State in 2005.

Adams started working as a student assistant at Boise State in 2005 before becoming a coach. In 2007, he became the run game coordinator and offensive line coach at West Washington University.

Before moving to Colorado in 2013 to coach the tight ends and running backs, he worked as an offensive assistant for two seasons at Sacramento State and two more seasons at San Jose State.
