The 2024 college football season just started, but our top 25 has already undergone significant changes. While Oregon, Clemson, and Florida State got off to a slow start, other teams—Notre Dame, Miami, and USC—started the season strong.
Here are our top 25 college football teams as of Week 2 of play. Please be aware that these are not equivalent to PFF’s power rankings.
1. Georgia Bulldogs (Score: 1-0; Previously: #1).
Week Two Matchup: against. Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.
Georgia disassembled the then-No. 14 Clemson, 34–3, over the previous weekend. With an average of just 3 points and 9 yards per play, the Tigers’ offense was unable to generate any momentum against the Bulldogs. Georgia has an exact replica of the No. currently the only team in the nation.
2. . Ohio State Buckeyes (Track: 1-0; Previous: 2nd).
Week 2 Matchup: against. The Western Michigan Broncos.
The season began with Ohio State sleeping through a lethargic first half and defeating Akron 52–6 in the second. As the highest-rated wide receiver recruit ever by 247Sports, true freshman Jeremiah Smith lived up to the hype. In his collegiate debut, he finished with two touchdowns and 92 yards from six catches on eight targets.
3. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are currently 1-0 and were previously ranked sixth.
Week 2 Matchup: against. The Huskies from Northern Illinois.
Thanks to an outstanding 23-13 triumph over then-No. 20 Texas A & M. The Aggies were smothered by the Fighting Irish’s outstanding defense, which led to a career-low 28.0 PFF passing grade for Conner Weigman, PFF’s top quarterback prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft.
4. Ole Miss Rebels (Score: 1-0; Previously: 4th).
Week 2: versus. Blue Raiders from Middle Tennessee.
Following eight consecutive scoring drives and a shutout against Furman, Ole Miss began the season with a 76-0 victory. This week, Jaxson Dart led all quarterbacks in the country with a 95-point PFF grade, demonstrating why he is among the top candidates for the Heisman Trophy going into the season.
5. . Texas Longhorns (Previous: 5th, Record: 1-0).
Matchup in Week 2: at No. Michigan Wolverines, nine.
Colorado State was crushed by Texas, 52-0. Tory Horton was shut down masterfully by the Longhorns. Stopped for just five catches for 31 yards, averaging just 1.72 yards per route run, by the top-70 prospect on PFF’s 2025 NFL Draft big board. Longhorns play against none. 9 Michigan this week in what is likely to be the most important non-conference game of the college football season.
6. Oregon Ducks (clinched, 1-0; previously: third).
Week Two Matchup: against. Idaho State Broncos.
Though it wasn’t particularly pretty, the Ducks prevailed in their season opener. Despite having a 49-point advantage over the FCS team, Oregon defeated Idaho 24–14. The Ducks’ offense, which was regarded as the best in the country going into the season, struggled against the Vandals, averaging just -0 points added per play, their lowest total since the 2022 campaign. This week, when Oregon plays Boise State, one of the Group of Five’s strongest playoff contenders, it cannot afford to appear as lethargic.
7. The Penn State Nittany Lions (formerly ranked ninth) have a record of 1-0.
Week Two: versus. Falcons in bowling green.
Traveling to West Virginia, Penn State defeated them 34–12 to start the season in style. The two new coordinators for the Nittany Lions, Andy Kotelnicki and Tom Allen, were the highlights of the day. With motion on 66 points1 percent of plays after the unit did so on 45 points7 percent of plays the previous year, Kotelnicki was a breath of fresh air for what had previously been a blah Penn State offense. By allowing just 3 point7 yards per play, Allen and the Nittany Lions’ defense neutralized the explosive Mountaineers attack.
8. . The Alabama Crimson Tide (Since: 7th, Record: 1-0).
Week 2 Matchup: against. USF Bulls.
A 63-0 victory over Western Kentucky marked the beginning of an explosive Kalen DeBoer era at Alabama. Since Ryan Williams is a true freshman, the Crimson Tide may have discovered a new star despite their inexperienced receiving corps being one of their biggest questions heading into the season. The victory came from the 17-year-old speedster catching both of his targets for 139 yards and two touchdowns. After defeating the Bulls just 17-3 last year despite being 34 points and 5-point favorites, Alabama will attempt to look much better this week against USF than it did the previous year.
9.
The Michigan Wolverines are 1-0 on the season and ranked eighth previously.
Week Two: versus. No. Five Longhorns from Texas.
Davis Warren, a redshirt junior, was the starting quarterback for the Wolverines against Fresno State, which surprised many. His final PFF passing grade of 68 points came from a play that was deemed to be a turnover in a 30-10 victory, but other than that, the results were largely unremarkable. The greatest game of Week 2 between Michigan and Texas is this coming Thursday, so Sherrone Moore will probably need more from his offense.
10. . Hurricanes of Miami, Florida (1-0 record, previous: 12th).
Week Two Matchup: against. The Florida A&M Rattlers.
It appears that “The U” may return. Miami defeated Florida 41–17 to start their 2024 campaign in “The Swamp.”. Cam Ward had an excellent debut with the Hurricanes, save from one ugly interception. With four clutch throws in the win, the Washington State transfer concluded with an overall PFF grade of 90 points.
11. . Missouri Tigers (Score: 1-0; Previously: 10th).
12. . Arizona Wildcats (Lost: 11th, Record: 1-0).
Thirteen. Tennessee Volunteers (Standings: 15, Previous: 1-0).
14. Cardinals of Louisville (1-0 record; previously: 17th).
15. Oklahoma Sooners (Score: 1-0; Previously: 18th).
sixteen. USC Trojans (1-0-0 record; previously: 21st).
17. . The Kansas State Wildcats (1-0, 19th) are the team.
18. . Utah Utes (20th, previous: 20th, record: 1-0).
19. Oklahoma State Cowboys (Score: 1-0; Previously: 22nd).
Twenty. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (Score: 2-0; Previously: NR).
22. LSU Tigers (Schedule: 14th, Record: 0-1).
21. Kansas Jayhawks (past: 21st; record: 1-0).
24. Tigers of Clemson (Track: 0-1, Previous: 13th).
24. Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0-0 record; previously ranked 24th).
