Rangers Acquire J.T. Miller, Erik Brannstrom, and Jackson Dorrington

Miller as well as defensemen Erik Brannstrom and Jackson Dorrington from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forward Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini and a conditional first round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Miller, 31, has notched nine goals and 26 assists for 35 points in 40 games for the Canucks this season.
He ranks second on the club in assists, points, and power play points (14).
Last season, Miller collected career-highs in goals (37), points (103), power play points (40), game-winning goals (9), plus/minus (+32) and hits (217).
Brannstrom, 25, has notched three goals and five assists for eight points in 28 games for the Canucks this season.

The acquisition of forward J was announced today by Chris Drury, the general manager and president of the New York Rangers. The T. Miller and the Vancouver Canucks’ defensemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom in return for a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, defenseman Victor Mancini, and forward Filip Chytil.

The 31-year-old Miller has scored 35 points in 40 games for the Canucks this season with nine goals and 26 assists. In terms of assists, points, and power play points (14), he is ranked second on the team. Miller also has the seventh-highest faceoff percentage in the NHL (58 points).

Over the course of 13 NHL seasons, the 6-1, 218-pound forward has participated in 839 regular season games while playing for the Rangers, Vancouver, and Tampa Bay, scoring 674 points (247G-427A). Miller has been the only NHL player to record 300 points or more and 600 hits or more since the 2021–22 campaign. He is one of just 11 skaters to have three or more seasons with 50 or more assists during that time frame, and his 319 points rank 13th in the NHL.

Miller set career highs in several categories last season, including goals (37), points (103), power play points (40), game-winning goals (9), plus/minus (+32), and hits (217). He tied for sixth place in the NHL in power play points, and he led the league in assists with 66. Miller was also selected to play in the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto.

Additionally, over portions of eight different seasons, Miller participated in 91 career playoff games, scoring 56 points (12G-44A). In the 2024 postseason, Miller tied Vancouver for the most points with twelve. He is one of just 14 NHL players (min.) this season. 30 games played) who have scored at least 1.0 points per game on average during the postseason.

Miller, who hails from East Palestine, Ohio, has competed for the United States in the 2010 World U17 Hockey Challenge, the 2011 IIHF U18 World Championship, and the IIHF World Junior Championships in 2012 and 2013. The Blueshirts initially selected Miller in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, 15th overall. Miller played parts of six seasons with the Rangers from 2012–13 to 2017–18, scoring 172 points (72G–100A) in 341 games during his first stint with the team.

In 28 games so far this season, the 25-year-old Brannstrom has three goals and five assists for eight points for the Canucks. In eight games, he has scored an additional 12 points (2G-10A) and recorded a plus-11 rating for the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL.

During his career, the 5-10, 185-pound blueliner has scored 77 points (10G-67A) in 294 NHL games between Vancouver and Ottawa. With Ottawa in 2023–24, the native of Eksjo, Sweden, set career highs in assists (17) and points (20).

In 23 games this season, Dorrington, 20, has two goals and eight assists for a total of 10 points at Northeastern University. He has scored 91 games for a total of 28 points (8G-20A) over his three collegiate seasons.

The Manchester, New Hampshire native played for the USHL’s Des Moines before attending Northeastern, scoring 11 points (3G-8A) in 41 games. He received the BioSteel All-American designation for 2022.
