This victory is huge for Navy and Brian Newberry.
Although this was Newberry’s second Army-Navy Game as the Naval Academy’s commander, it was crucial that he win. Not for himself, but for the Academy in general.
The tide has shifted in recent seasons, but Navy dominated this series for almost 20 years, winning 16 of 18 meetings between 1997 and 2015. Before the season began, Army had not only won six of the previous eight meetings, but it also entered and won Navy’s conference this year.
In all ten seasons, Navy has failed to win the league.
But the truth is, none of that is important. The Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy is on its way to Annapolis after Navy won this match. For both of these teams, that is ultimately all that matters.

Turnovers were of the essence.
In any game between service academies, turnovers will have a significant effect. In every game, they are crucial. But in situations like this, where fewer belongings are present, they become more important.
There were five fumbles during the game, but the fumbling team recovered from each one, which is really crazy.
Even more bizarre is the fact that Army entered the game with the fewest total turnovers (five) and the lowest offensive turnover rate of the season. The ball was then turned over three times during this game.
Though he doesn’t drop back to pass very often, Bryson Daily handles the football when he does. Navy forced him to throw three today after making him uncomfortable throughout the game; he had only thrown one interception all season. The Army was just unable to move past the errors.

Much credit should be given to the Navy’s defense.
Although Blake Horvath will undoubtedly get a lot of praise, we shouldn’t undervalue the Navy defense’s performance in this match. Navy’s strategy was obvious: eliminate the Army’s rushing attack and make Bryson Daily switch to dropback passing in order to find explosive plays. Every team that has faced Army this season has adopted the same strategy, but few have been successful.
The Navy was in control.
Army’s rushing total was limited to 113 yards, with an average of just 2 to 9 yards per carry. Army gained 207 yards on 3 point 6 yards per carry in that game, proving that even the Notre Dame defense was ineffective.
The longest rush Army managed during the game was Kanye Udoh’s 12-yard pickup (53 yards on 14 carries). Throughout the entire game, Daily didn’t have a rush of more than five yards.

Blake Horvath was a surprise.
I don’t think anyone anticipated this performance, even though Blake Horvath was having a strong season for Navy. Due to an injury to his throwing shoulder, he was unable to play in Navy’s most recent game against East Carolina and was knocked out of the team’s defeat to Tulane. One could reasonably wonder if Horvath would be available to play this game or even if he would be completely focused if he did.
If this isn’t Horvath at his best, I’m afraid of what he can do when he’s fully charged.
Although it seems out of place for a service academy, Horvath’s 107 yards and two touchdowns during the game are consistent with his performance this season. This is the fifth time this season that he has thrown more than one touchdown and the eighth time that he has thrown for at least 100 yards in a game.
Nevertheless, his rushing total of 204 yards was the most he had since he ran for 211 yards against Memphis in September. 21 and that occurred during a 56-44 shootout in which not many tackles were made. In no other game this season had he rushed for more than 129 yards.
In fact, Horvath’s performance was exactly what was expected of him by Army’s Bryson Daily, who came into the game tied with Ashton Jeanty of Boise State for the season’s most rushing touchdowns (29).

Navy’s field goal increases the lead to 18.
Army 13, Navy 31 Q4.
The army will now require a miracle.
Navy increases its lead to 18 points by converting a 27-yard field goal after the interception. But the three minutes of game time that the Midshipmen offense took off the clock in doing so was more significant than the three points.
Army has just 3:45 remaining to score three points before their timeouts run out. The odds, I’ll say, are not very good.

A wagon is still Blake Horvath.
Navy is within 15 yards of the Army 15 after Horvath added another 48 yards to his rushing total. Horvath can run for up to 199 yards on 24 carries.
Army’s total is 178 yards.

when you are in a favorable situation.
Bryson Daily crosses the line of scrimmage, passes back across the field, and rolls to his left to buy time. It is grabbed, but before it hits the ground, it escapes and lands in the arms of another Navy defender.
With 7:24 remaining in the game, Navy leads by 15 points after a turnover and recovers the ball at midfield.
Both teams have had that kind of day.

Navy gains a lead of two touchdowns.
Q4: Army 13, Navy 28.
That ought to be sufficient. Navy refused to stop the Army when it was needed. Blake Horvath’s 1-yard touchdown run at the end of a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive was sustained by a masterful fake punt.
Horvath has now gained two touchdowns and 144 yards on the ground. The Army’s total yardage is just 167.
It will be very difficult for the Knights to rally with just 8:50 left and the Army down to one timeout.

False punt!
Navy with the cunning! The Midshipmen run a fake after they are down four at midfield and pass the ball to defensive lineman Landon Robinson, who gains thirty yards. Naturally, it also almost went horribly wrong because Robinson, who isn’t used to carrying the ball, fumbled after being tackled, but Navy managed to recover.
Perhaps that fake ruined the game.

With yet another field goal, Army takes the lead.
Q4: Army 13, Navy 21.
Army’s one-score game was made possible by a 31-yard field goal, which is good news. The bad news is that it consumed 6:43 of game time and required 13 plays to move 45 yards. The fact that Army used two timeouts on the possession, leaving them with just one, further complicates the situation, even though there is still 14:44 left in the game.
To force overtime, Army must now commit a stop, score a touchdown, and convert a two-pointer. Unless it comes very quickly, another Navy score would probably end the game.

Navy 21, Army 10 (END 3Q).
After three quarters, Navy leads Army 21–10, and the Midshipmen have been able to increase their lead in the second half. Army started the second half with a field goal drive after leading 14–7 at the half, but Navy didn’t waste any time in answering, as Blake Horvath hit Eli Heidenreich for a 52-yard touchdown less than two minutes later.
But there is still hope for the Army. With their offense in the red zone at the end of the third quarter, the Knights were hoping to reduce the game to a one-score contest.
This will require the Army to overcome a Navy-run defense that has proven resilient over the course of 45 minutes. Although Army is only averaging 3 yards per carry, the team has rushed for 111 yards. Compare that to Blake Horvath, the quarterback for the Navy, who has rushed for 101 yards alone.

Army is a complete mess.
Army must decide on a fourth-and-six at its 45-yard line as their run game continues to deteriorate. The offense is left out by Jeff Monken, but the Knights take too long to line up, so Bryson Daily has to burn a timeout.
In addition to being down two points in the third quarter and facing a critical fourth down, Army is currently down a timeout that could be important in the game’s later stages. Everything is in a mess.
The good news for Army is that in order to prolong the drive, Navy is called for roughing the passer on fourth down. A pass interference flag was also raised, but Army chose not to accept the punishment.

We have Eli Heidenrich here.
Army 10 Q3: Navy 21.
All of a sudden, the Navy is a quick-strike. Eli Heidenreich receives a pass from Blake Horvath, who drops back, and all he needs to do is shake a tackler to score the touchdown, which is 52 yards down the sideline.
Horvath now has 101 yards on the ground and 107 yards in the air after his second touchdown pass of the game. Horvath and Bryson Daily of the Army have already combined for three passing touchdowns today, the most in an Army-Navy game since 2010.
Regarding Heidenreich, it has been clear that Army’s defensive strategy was to remove him from the game, and it had been effective until that touchdown.

Army’s field goal puts them ahead.
Q3: Army 10 Navy 14.
Navy’s run defense is still playing well, and they were able to stop the drive despite Army’s 47 yards in 11 plays and their attempt to keep the drive going by drawing a pass interference on a surprise pass on fourth down. The lead was reduced to 14–10 when Trey Gronotte made a 39-yard field goal following an incomplete pass from Bryson Daily.
Although Kanye Udoh gained 12 yards to start the drive, Army was stifled after that. With this Army offense, Daily’s ten pass attempts are not a recipe for success. Due to being held to 2 points 4 yards per carry and not having a run longer than 5 yards, he has been unable to get anything going on the ground.

HALFTIME: Army 7, Navy 14.
In the 125th Army-Navy Game, we have a great one on our hands. Early on, it appeared as though we might be in for a lopsided game as Navy scored a touchdown on their first possession and added another to take a 14-0 lead while Army found it difficult to mount an offensive effort.
Otherwise, the Black Knights have had trouble finding offensive consistency, but Army finally broke through in the second quarter to cut the lead in half. They averaged a pitiful 2 to 9 yards per carry, managing just 56 yards of rushing.
The game’s two quarterbacks are both performing admirably. Through the air and on the ground, Navy’s Blake Horvath has thrown for 55 yards and rushed for another 98 yards with a touchdown. Bryson Daily of Army also threw a touchdown, despite having to deal with a cut on his non-throwing hand from it being stepped on early in the game. On the ground, he has been held to 30 yards, but he is passing at 50 yards.
Army will attempt to tie the game by getting the ball to begin the second half.

Navy has another opportunity to score before halftime after a stop.
It’s a fantastic day for the Navy defense. Due to Navy holding them to 2 point 9 yards per carry on the ground, Army hasn’t been able to accomplish much aside from the touchdown drive.
With two timeouts remaining and 1:25 remaining, Navy gets the ball at its 35. We’ll see how forceful they are in their attempts to arrive.

Navy had to punt.
In this matchup, staying ahead of the chains is crucial. In order to enter Army territory, Blake Horvath shakes a defender and runs 37 yards. However, the Midshipmen lose yards on the very next play and are forced to punt as a result.
With just over four minutes remaining, Army gets the ball at its 8-yard line with a chance to tie the score before halftime.

Question 2: Army 7, Navy 14.
Finally, the Army is on the board, but it wasn’t there on the ground. An 8-play, 65-yard drive is completed when Bryson Daily completes a jump pass to Hayden Reed for a 23-yard touchdown. The Army also desperately needed the push.
The Knights obtained three first downs on their third possession after only managing 25 yards and two first downs on their first two. They also converted on a critical fourth down to extend the drive.

Navy seizes the opportunity right away.
Navy 14; Army 0 Q2.
In this game, turnovers are very important, and Navy capitalized on the first one. After the interception, Blake Horvath hit Brandon Chatman for an 18-yard touchdown pass on a wheel route out of the backfield, and the Midshipmen marched 44 yards in 3 plays.
Horvath’s 21-yard run, which he took after initially dropping back to pass, was the drive’s big play.
Horvath has already rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown and thrown for 49 yards and a touchdown, making it a fantastic start to the day. Compared to Army’s 25 yards as a team, he has 97 yards alone.

Stopping!
Army had just five turnovers this season going into the game. The nation’s lowest number.
Their sixth was just over.
After dropping back on third down and holding the ball for an excessive amount of time, Bryson Daily made a poor throw that Navy’s Dashaun Peele caught. This is only Daily’s second interception of the season and Peele’s fifth overall.
At the Army 44, the midshipmen once again get the ball in excellent field position.

END 1: Army 0; Navy 7.
As we enter the fourth quarter of The Army-Navy Game, it appears to be roughly what you would anticipate from a matchup between two option offenses: there have been a lot of runs and few plays because the clock is always running.
Despite this, Navy has been the more successful of the two, even though they are only up a touchdown. Using a screen pass for 31 yards and three third-down conversions to keep the drive going, Navy gained 65 yards on the game’s first possession. The final score that we have seen so far is a 1-yard touchdown run from Blake Horvath.
The Army has not been nearly as successful. Only 13 yards were gained on the Black Knights’ first possession before a punt was called. To make things worse, quarterback Bryson Daily’s hand was trampled. Army has the ball to begin the second quarter and must make a fourth-and-short decision while his left hand is bandaged.

When the pitch is poor, Navy loses by about a mile.
Fumbles frequently decide results when you have two offenses that combine a lot of running and pitching. Despite avoiding a loss in this instance, Navy will not succeed in the long run if they lose 14 yards on a poor pitch. Despite Horvath’s ability to catch the loose ball before Army, this play ends Navy’s most recent possession and results in a punt.
The 12-yard line will be the starting point for Army’s second possession.

An Army punt is forced by the Navy.
Not much was accomplished by the Army’s first possession of the day. The Knights had to punt after only 13 yards and one first down. Bryson Daily, the Army quarterback, is already bleeding, which makes the possession the most intriguing. Though not particularly serious, the cut on his non-throwing hand is an interesting sight.

Army 0, Navy 7.
It is a remarkable way to begin the game. Navy gains great field position after an out-of-bounds kickoff, and they go 65 yards in 12 plays, including three third-down conversions. Alex Tecza’s 31-yard screen pass that put the Mids in the red zone was the most impressive play, and Blake Horvath’s 1-yard quarterback sneak completed it.
Additionally, the drive took more than six minutes off the clock, in keeping with service academy protocol.
