Head coach Antonio Pierce fired three offensive coaches Sunday night after the Raiders’ 41-24 loss to Cincinnati.
Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, offensive line coach James Cregg and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello were all relieved of their duties after Sunday’s game.
Scott Turner, who previously was an offensive coordinator in Washington and Carolina, would eventually be named the interim offensive coordinator.
But, to be sure, this meeting was nothing like one between the players and head coach from almost exactly a year ago.
Just days before Mark Davis fired Josh McDaniels as head coach, McDaniels opened the floor to players.
After five consecutive losses, the 2-7 Las Vegas Raiders are taking advantage of a much-needed bye week. However, the group did not end their vacation in silence.
Several Raiders players, including team captain Maxx Crosby, openly discussed what they perceived as weekly inefficiencies and shortcomings within the organization during a players-and-staff meeting on Monday, according to sources who spoke to CBS Sports.
It is hoped by all that the discussions will lead to some improvement for the Raiders in the second half of the season.
Sunday night, following the Raiders’ 41-24 loss to Cincinnati, head coach Antonio Pierce fired three offensive coaches. Following the game on Sunday, quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, and offensive line coach James Cregg were relieved of their positions.
Pierce was reorganizing his offensive staff by Monday morning. In the end, Scott Turner—a former offensive coordinator in Washington and Carolina—would be appointed as the acting offensive coordinator. The Raiders made senior offensive assistant Joe Philbin the new offensive line coach instead of hiring an assistant, which is a little out of the ordinary. Because Philbin had been working with that group on a regular basis throughout the season, an assistant was not required.
Despite Scangarello’s dismissal, assistant quarterbacks coach Fred Walker was not promoted, but Scott’s father, Norv Turner, was added to the team as an advisor. Turner, a 72-year-old veteran NFL offensive coordinator, has served as head coach three times. Former head coaches Turner, Philbin, and Marvin Lewis are all employed by Pierce.
The team met with the staff following the coaches’ meeting on Monday, and everyone was free to voice their opinions. A few themes surfaced, based on the available sources. Players complained that the schedule was ineffective. There was “wasting time,” a lack of organization, and a “lack of discipline and accountability.”. “..”.
“Uncomfortably for all parties,” according to one source, the meeting ended. However, this meeting was definitely not like the one that took place between the head coach and the players nearly a year ago.
Josh McDaniels allowed players to speak just a few days before Mark Davis fired him as head coach. They blasted McDaniels for his actions and team management. A few days later, on Halloween, McDaniels was fired after the owner learned of it.
Last season, the team finished 5-4 under Pierce’s leadership, and the players came together to support him and win the permanent position. In order to hire Pierce as the league’s permanent head coach, as had been expected since the team’s victory over the Chiefs on Christmas Day, the Raiders followed the bare minimum of league regulations during their search.
