Jaguars on doorstep of major changes after Lions put up 50 points, hand them worst loss in franchise history

CBS Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the middle of one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory.
The Jaguars suffered a 52-6 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, their worst loss in franchise history.
Trent Baalke will have a 30-64 record as the Jags’ GM with a loss against the Detroit Lions today, which is looking likely as Jacksonville is down 42-6 in the third.
Then, in 2021, the Jaguars fired head coach Urban Meyer less than a year into his tenure.
That led to Jaguars owner Shad Khan dubbing them “the best team assembled by the Jacksonville Jaguars ever” back in September, adding an extra sting to this well below .500 record.

NEGATIVE

The current season for the Jacksonville Jaguars is among the worst in recent memory. And sooner rather than later, that disappointment might result in big changes. The Jaguars lost to the Detroit Lions 52-6 on Sunday, which was their worst defeat ever.

The Jaguars’ management is not optimistic going into the bye week because, according to a report before the game by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, a loss to Detroit could spell the end of the Doug Pederson era in Jacksonville. Jones also mentioned that the league is expected to look for a new general manager and head coach this offseason.

Given that Jacksonville is behind 42-6 in the third quarter, a loss to the Detroit Lions today would put Trent Baalke’s record as general manager of the Jags at 30-64. After assuming the position in 2021, Baalke has only made two postseason appearances and won one.

This report about a possible change follows one from NFL Media that indicated the team might make a “dramatic move” this week. Because he has head coaching experience, Mike McCoy, the quarterbacks coach, might be a contender to replace Pederson if the Jaguars decide to cut him.

Jones continues, “Today, they might be looking at two options in Lions coordinator Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, who could be the team’s leader in 2025.”.

It wouldn’t be unusual for Jacksonville to switch players at either position during the season. After three seasons, the team fired general manager Dave Caldwell in late November 2020. The Jaguars then dismissed head coach Urban Meyer in 2021, less than a year into his position.

In 2022, Pederson was hired as head coach in the hopes of providing stability to the team. He had a history of winning Super Bowls before joining Jacksonville. Nevertheless, despite a 2-8 start to the 2024 season, the team has not yet achieved the heights they had hoped for under Pederson.

The Jaguars’ difficult run also follows the team’s massive offseason extensions to Josh Hines-Allen and Trevor Lawrence. This made this far below-dot500 record even more painful, as Jaguars owner Shad Khan referred to them as “the best team assembled by the Jacksonville Jaguars ever” back in September.

In light of this, adjustments are probably in order, and they may happen as soon as this week, particularly following their historic defeat on Sunday.
