Three quarterbacks started their careers as professional quarterbacks in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, with six quarterbacks selected among the first 12 picks, a first in NFL history.

Together, those first-year pass students had an extremely difficult time of it.

With the exception of C’s effective performance, the second-year throwers did not perform much better. I. J. Stroud along with some amazing splash plays from Anthony Richardson.

During a mostly low-scoring Week 1, a total of seven quarterbacks chosen in the previous two NFL Draft classes saw significant playing time.

Analyzing each quarterback’s unique effort and grading each one individually, considering all facets of their play, let’s go deep into the game. This is a debut piece that will be released every Tuesday and required at least ten attempts to be eligible for publication.

Superior Throws and Plays:.

During the second quarter, Nix showed great aggression in the pocket, finding a wide-open Courtland Sutton for a 17-yard gain over the middle.

Just before the half ended, Josh Reynolds and I had a beautiful back-shoulder connection.

In the fourth quarter, he showed off impressive acceleration on a 23-yard scramble.

His 4-yard touchdown run demonstrated excellent balance and athleticism.

Low-Rate Throws and Plays:.

Nix airmailed a deep dig that might have been intercepted to Sutton late in the first game. The seasoned receiver was also behind the throw.

With a cornerback exactly underneath the route and a safety closely shaded to Sutton’s side of the field, his first interception was a semi-fadeaway inside the pocket and a forced throw to the front pylon intended for Sutton. foolish toss.

Subsequently in the second half, Nix again trailed Sutton on an in-breaking route that was unsuccessful, but this time it happened in the end zone.

Nix threw a seam pass that was dropped directly to Seahawks linebacker Tyrel Dodson following the two-minute warning.

The following play, Nix spun left out of the pocket and lost six yards after running out of bounds rather than throwing the ball away as defenders pursued.

Nix’s subsequent interception was not quick enough to hit Sutton on a deep over; it was made too late. To get the pick, Riq Woolen moved forward.

Nix’s NFL debut was overall pretty horrific, if not completely brutal. He did a good job running Sean Payton’s underneath offense, but he struggled to generate completion when asked to make intermediate-level throws without a receiver who was obviously wide open. He felt that the game moved a little too quickly because he missed a few throws. There could have been a few more interceptions in Nix’s two-interception performance.

Superior Throws/Plays:.

Adam Thielen was found with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Young late in the first quarter while he was on an inbreaking route.

The third quarter ended with the score comfortably out of reach. Young, being pursued in the pocket, found Xavier Legette on a deep corner route.

He used a skillful crossover move to get away from the defender in open space during his touchdown scamper.

Low-Rate Throws and Plays:.

Young’s first pass of the season was an incomplete overthrow that was intercepted that was intended for a covered Diontae Johnson. Aw shucks.

Young watched Miles Sanders reverse course on a scramble drill after clearing the pocket to his left. Let’s go. Young’s accuracy on the off-script throw was just off.

Playing in the scramble drill mode, Young hopped up and airmailed Thielen. The deep safety caught the ball.

He attempted a well-short seam throw to Jordan Matthews in the fourth quarter.

To be sure, Young had a poor game, but the Panthers’ lopsided loss was more the result of a terrible team effort. He struggled with perfect ball placement from the start of the game, became frustrated with the amount of pressure he was under, and was unable to convert on plays when he darted out of the pocket. Although this start did little to allay worries about Young following a disastrous rookie campaign, his offensive line did not help much.

Superior Throws and Plays:.

After rolling right, Richardson made his first throw of the season. Michael Pittman caught a 13-yard rocket throw from him.

One of the most absurd demonstrations of sheer arm strength I have ever seen was the touchdown to Alec Pierce. Richardson had little room to step into his long-ball attempt after slipping during his drop back. It hit the seasoned receiver after flying nearly 70 yards for the touchdown. Amazing.

A long, rocket of a throw from the far hash across the middle through a quickly closing window set up Ashton Dulin’s catch-and-run touchdown. incredible speed during the toss.

Richardson showed off his deceptive long speed once he gets into top gear in the second, with a 19-yard scamper.

Another pass that went about 65 yards in the air and on target was the 57-yard completion to Pierce in the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, on a 10-yard scramble, there was a nasty cut.

Poor-Quality Throws/Plays:.

He attempted an incomplete airmailed comeback route to AD Mitchell with his third throw of the game.

Later in the first half, Mitchell attempted a deep comeback, but Richardson missed.

In the final seconds of the second quarter, Richardson misplayed a wide-open Mitchell in the end zone while making a trick play.

An overthrow in front of tight end Kylen Granson resulted in an interception by Calen Bullock.

In the fourth quarter, he passed up Pittman’s deep chase.

In what turned out to be just his fifth NFL game, Richardson showed off his raw edges as anticipated. However, the spectacular splash plays showcased his extraordinary athletic prowess and demonstrated his incredible throwing ability.

Excellent Throws and Plays:.

On Stroud’s second drop back of the play, he impressively sidestepped a defender and scrambled 13 yards afterward.

Stroud showed off his vision, arm strength, and commitment to making a play by throwing across his body to find Nico Collins for what resulted in a 19-yard gain on third-and-14 after rolling out of the pocket to his right and a split second before going out of bounds.

On third-and-11, his last pass of the game was a perfect . to Collins in close quarters close to the sideline. ideally placed and timed to bring the game to a conclusion.

Low-Rate Throws and Plays:.

After dodging a defender to get the interception in the third quarter, he lofted the ball into coverage while being tackled by another Colts defender. Unwise choice.

Later on in the quarter, Stroud underthrew Dell when he was open on a post play that would have resulted in a touchdown. I almost picked the ball.

In the third, he tossed the ball over the head of his intended recipient.

Summary: While Stroud’s performance was not nearly as impressive as it was towards the end of the previous season, he still managed to handle the Colts’ pass rush fairly well and showed his ability to create plays as Houston pulled off an AFC South road victory to start the season.

Superior Throws/Plays:.

Although it wasn’t the hardest pass of the first week, Levis hit Calvin Ridley with a touchdown pass that traveled 22 yards through the final window.

In the second half, Tyler Boyd made a perfectly timed long throw across the field on an explosive route. The quarterback had a poor angle because the ball needed to be hit with pinpoint accuracy. Indeed, it did.

With less than two minutes remaining, Levis anticipated Ridley’s deep, game-winning run of 22 yards and threw.

Low-Rate Throws and Plays:.

His second throw of the day was a misfire from the pocket, wide of its intended target underneath.

Ridley was hit by Levis’ deep down-the-middle long ball. The throw simply lacked sufficient air beneath it, even though the veteran was open.

The initial intercept was heinous. Try an underhanded flip toward the sideline while falling to the ground, aimed at a receiver who is obviously covered. It was going to be a pick six.

He attempted a back-shoulder throw on the last drive, sending Ridley flying. gave his wideout not even close to a chance.

He drove erratically on the next drive, slanting toward Ridley.

Levis’ final pick of the game was under pressure, and although it was somewhat of a desperation heave, he heaved the ball into deep traffic.

Summary: Levis showed glimpses of brilliance in this game, but the Titans were unable to repay the favor during the game due to nearly as many terrible errors that cost them a large lead that quickly grew to a seven-point deficit. The majority of his work was underneath, and he missed few opportunities to extend Chicago’s defense vertically.

Excellent Throws and Plays:.

As they were being pursued on a bootleg in the second quarter, Williams shot D.J with a laser. For 11 yards, Moore goes up against tight coverage.

Williams threw a short out-breaker to Keenan Allen in the end zone, but Allen dropped it despite Williams’ strong velocity against a flat angle.

With a third-and-10 in the third, Williams executed a brilliant dribble to move the chains while dodging a defender in space.

Poor-Quality Throws/Plays:.

Keenan Allen was completely open to Ballyhoo early in the game, but Williams missed him.

The second drive featured an unsightly 19-yard sack.

He made a low, mishandled throw too far out in front of an almost intercepted in-breaking route late in the first half.

Williams threw an easy pass to D’Andre Swift in the flat, but it went wrong.

Perhaps there was a misunderstanding, but Rome Odunze made a low throw that went across the middle in the third.

For someone who appeared to have it so easy in college, Williams’s NFL debut was a classic Welcome to the NFL experience. Tight coverage all around, batted passes at the line, and windows that close quickly. Williams had several opportunities to open receivers with passes, and the Allen touchdown pass deflated the stat line. Some life was evident in his improvisation. The Titans mostly restrained his artistic expression.

Excellent Throws/Plays:.

Daniels showed exceptional burst and balance tip-toeing down the sideline for a 17-yard gain on a third-and-4 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Daniels had a nice 12-yard scramble.

During an 11-yard scramble in the third, he broke a couple of arm tackles.

Daniels zinged a fastball to Ertz despite Lavonte David’s tight coverage.

Low-Rate Throws and Plays:.

Zach Ertz was knocked down by a late throw that he made.

In the third quarter, Daniels attempted a throw into the flat but failed.

One attempt to spin out of the pocket in the fourth quarter resulted in a bad, 13-yard sack for him.

For an Air Raid offensive coordinator and a quarterback with Daniels’ skill set, such a cautious game plan; perhaps it was just because it was Daniels’ first NFL start. I loved how Daniels never hesitated to run; his athleticism was evident the entire time. Despite his lack of poor decisions, the throwing left a lot to be desired. Just not as spectacular as we were used to seeing at LSU the previous season.
