MIAMI — A potent storm in the Northern Atlantic has developed into Subtropical Storm Patty, the National Hurricane Center said Saturday morning.
A subtropical storm is a hybrid storm that draws some power from the warm waters of the Atlantic, but also from the traditional battle of warm and colder air like traditional storms.
A subtropical storm won’t have cold and warm fronts, instead featuring a defined center and closed circulation.

Patty becomes the 16th named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, which still runs through Nov. 30.
Miami — The National Hurricane Center reported Saturday morning that Subtropical Storm Patty had formed from a powerful storm in the Northern Atlantic.
Patty was roughly 300 miles west/northwest of the Azores as of 11 a.m., with sustained winds of 65 mph, up from 50 mph six hours prior. m. ET, according to the NHC. All of the islands are currently under tropical storm warnings.
A hybrid storm known as a subtropical storm gets some of its strength from the Atlantic’s warm waters, but it also takes inspiration from the classic conflict between warmer and colder air. Instead of having warm and cold fronts, a subtropical storm will have a closed circulation and a well-defined center.
According to the National Weather Service, there is less symmetry and the area of maximum winds within the circulation is usually farther from the center.
What is Subtropical Storm Patty’s forecast?
The NHC predicts that Patty will continue to be strong on Saturday before progressively waning on Sunday and possibly turning into a post-tropical cyclone by late Sunday.
In the coming days, the only land that stands in Patty’s path are the volcanic islands of the Azores, which are predicted to see 1-2 inches of rain and tropical storm-force winds through Sunday. Furthermore, Patty might introduce dangerous rip and surf currents to the archipelago.
Eventually, early next week, the storm’s remnants might make their way to Portugal and western Spain.
