The mission was dubbed Ghost Riders in the Sky by the company. It will touch down close to Mons Latreille, a volcanic feature in Mare Crisium, a basin located in the northeast quadrant of the lunar near side that is more than 300 miles wide. As part of the agency’s Moon to Mars exploration strategy, the mission will feature NASA research and first-of-its-kind technology demonstrations to deepen our understanding of the Moon’s environment and aid in preparing for upcoming human missions to the lunar surface.”. Payloads evaluating lunar subsurface drilling, regolith sample collection, radiation-tolerant computing, global navigation satellite system capabilities, and lunar dust mitigation are among them. By shedding light on the effects of space weather and other cosmic forces on Earth, the data collected also helps humanity.

In order to foster long-term lunar exploration and facilitate industry growth, NASA is investing in commercial delivery services to the Moon under the CLPS model. NASA hopes to be one of many clients on upcoming flights as the main recipient of CLPS deliveries.

NASA’s Artemis campaign involves several U.S. S. . businesses to bring technology and science to the lunar surface. These businesses can bid on task orders to transport NASA payloads to the moon. Launching from Earth and landing on the Moon’s surface, as well as payload integration and operations, are all included in the task order. Up until 2028, the total contract value of the current CLPS contracts, which are indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity agreements, cannot exceed $2.66 billion.
