Astronomers announced a new asteroid before learning it was actually a Tesla Elon Musk launched into space in 2018.
The Minor Planet Center announced the discovery of the presumed asteroid on January 2 – even giving it an official name of 2018 CN41.
However just hours later 17 hours later, astronomers issued an editorial change saying the asteroid had been deleted from its records – on account of it actually being a cherry-red Tesla Roadster.
The Tesla was launched up into outer space in 2018 in a promotional stunt by Elon Musk as SpaceX tested its Falcon Heavy rocket.
SpaceX even placed a mannequin wearing a white spacesuit in the driver’s side of the Tesla destined for the cosmos.
In 2018, Elon Musk launched a Tesla into space, which astronomers first reported was a new asteroid.
On January 2, the Minor Planet Center declared the probable asteroid’s discovery and even officially named it 2018 CN41. The asteroid was removed from the records, according to an editorial change made by astronomers just 17 hours later, because it was actually a cherry-red Tesla Roadster.
As SpaceX tested its Falcon Heavy rocket in 2018, Elon Musk pulled a publicity stunt by launching the Tesla into space. A white spacesuit-clad mannequin was even installed in the driver’s side of the Tesla that was headed into space by SpaceX.
Together with the upper stage of the Falcon Heavy rocket, the notice from the Minor Planet Center explained that the object was the Roadster.
It follows the destruction of SpaceX’s Starship rocket during a test flight on Thursday, following an exhilarating booster catch back at the pad.
In a statement, the company claimed that the rocket underwent “rapid unscheduled disassembly.”. Just 8 1/2 minutes into the flight, contact was lost as the spacecraft’s six engines seemed to shut down one by one during ascent. Similar to the company’s earlier test flight, the new and upgraded spacecraft was intended to launch from Texas and complete a full orbit of the globe.

For the purpose of practicing their release, Elon Musk’s company had loaded ten dummy satellites into the spacecraft. During the ascent, the spacecraft’s six engines seemed to burn out one by one, and contact was lost only 8 1/2 minutes into the flight. The launch tower’s enormous mechanical arms were used by SpaceX to capture the returning booster one minute prior to the loss, a first for the company. Before the pair of arms known as chopsticks grabbed hold of the descending booster, it hovered over the launch pad.
For the crowds gathered along the southern tip of Texas, as well as the company, the excitement of the catch soon gave way to disappointment.
“We are obviously disappointed about the ship, but it was great to see a booster come down,” SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot said. The test is for flight. He emphasized that it is an experimental vehicle.
