After launching aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 15, Firefly Aerospace’s moon-bound Blue Ghost spacecraft has been orbiting Earth ahead of a trans-lunar injection maneuver in just under a week’s time.

Firefly’s post indicates that Blue Ghost is preparing to continue its journey to the moon. It will spend 16 days in lunar orbit before making an attempt at a landing on March 2. The total duration of the mission is anticipated to be nearly 60 days, which includes 14 days of lunar operations and roughly 45 days of travel.

In order to support future human lunar exploration under the Artemis program, Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 1—a component of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program—aims to deliver ten scientific studies and technological demonstrations.

To deliver 94 kilograms (207 pounds) of payloads to the lunar surface, the Blue Ghost lander, which is roughly 2 meters tall and 3 to 5 meters wide, will land close to a volcanic feature called Mons Latreille within Mare Crisium, a basin that is 500 kilometers wide on the moon’s near side.

A few of the scientific goals are to analyze the characteristics of lunar regolith, study how the solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field interact, test the capabilities of the long-distance Global Navigation Satellite System, and evaluate radiation-tolerant computing.
