On Saturday Night Live last night (October 18), Sabrina Carpenter served as both host and musical guest. She performed songs from her recently released album, Man’s Best Friend. Carpenter sang the single “Manchild” into a hairbrush while wearing SNL-themed underwear; for the album track “Nobody’s Son,” she later put on a gi and practiced karate. Throughout the evening, Carpenter starred in sketches as a singing washing machine, a girlboss motivational speaker who sustains a head injury, and a 12-year-old boy podcast host.
In her opening monologue, Carpenter addressed the controversy around the Man’s Best Friend album cover. “What people don’t realize is that’s just how they cropped it,” she joked. “If you zoom out, it’s obviously a photo from the [Saturday Night Live] 50th anniversary special of Bowen [Yang] pulling me up by the hair after Martin Short pushed me out of the buffet line, saying something along the lines of, ‘Daddy needs his mini quiche. ’” Carpenter also touched on her brand as a “horndog popstar”—“I’m not just horny, I’m also turned on, and sexually charged”—did some sexually charged crowd work, and was nearly arrested by Keenan Thompson. See below for Carpenter’s complete speech and performances, as well as her SNL promo video featuring Marcello Hernandez.
Last night marked Carpenter’s third appearance on Saturday Night Live—fourth if you count her cameo in this year’s Quinta Brunson-hosted episode. She first stopped by Studio 8H as musical guest on the heels of her 2024 album Short n’ Sweet, and was a part of SNL50: The Anniversary Special, where she performed a duet of the Simon and Garfunkel song “Homeward Bound” alongside Paul Simon. Carpenter will begin a North American arena tour on Thursday, making stops in Pittsburgh, New York, Nashville, Toronto, and Los Angeles.
The 51st season of Saturday Night Live debuted on October 4. The season debut was hosted by Bad Bunny, with Doja Cat serving as musical guest. After taking this week off, SNL’s next three episodes are set to feature Miles Teller and Brandi Carlile, Nikki Glaser and Sombr, and Glen Powell and Olivia Dean, respectively.
