For the second time in the past month, the Boston Red Sox have promoted a top prospect.
Anthony will bat fifth and play right field in his debut, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before Monday’s game.
The Red Sox have been reeling since third baseman Alex Bregman went on the IL with a severe right quad strain on May 24.
In Bregman’s place, the club recalled Marcelo Mayer, their top infield prospect, and now Anthony joins the big-league club too.
Law provided this assessment of Anthony as he prepares to make his Red Sox debut: “Anthony remains the top prospect in baseball, keeping his No.
A top prospect has been promoted by the Boston Red Sox for the second time in the last month. Boston promoted Roman Anthony, an outfielder, on Monday, the No. one baseball prospect. First baseman Ryan Noda was assigned to make room for Anthony on the 40-man roster, and right fielder Wilyer Abreu was placed on the injured list.
The Red Sox have called up Anthony, one of the best hitters in the minor leagues, to help the team during a time when they are fighting to survive in the American League East, but after a crucial series victory over the New York Yankees over the weekend.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced prior to Monday’s game that Anthony would make his debut as a right fielder and bat fifth.
With a .914 OPS, 10 home runs, nine doubles, two triples, 51 walks, and 56 strikeouts, the 21-year-old is hitting .288 in 58 Triple-A games.
Since Alex Bregman, the third baseman, was placed on the injured list on May 24 due to a severe strain to his right quadriceps, the Red Sox have been in disarray. With him gone, they are 6-9. The team lost first baseman Triston Casas to season-ending knee surgery at the beginning of May.
The team brought back their best infield prospect, Marcelo Mayer, to replace Bregman, and now Anthony is also joining the major league team. All three of Boston’s top prospects going into the season are now in the major leagues, including Kristian Campbell, who was on the Opening Day roster.
A 2022 second-round draft selection, Anthony has demonstrated incredible strength throughout his career, but this season he has been especially effective. With 32 barreled balls, he leads all minor league players.
Since suffering a shoulder injury in late April, he has played 29 games in left field, 11 in center, and four in right for Triple-A Worcester. He has also been the designated hitter for 14 of those games.
Anthony, who turned 21 on May 13, has consistently been the youngest hitter in his league during his minor league career. He hit .291 with an OPS of .894 in 119 Double A and Triple A games last season, along with 32 doubles and 18 home runs.
As Anthony gets ready to make his Red Sox debut, Law offered this evaluation.
“With his No. 1 spot, Anthony continues to be the best baseball prospect. 1 status as a result of his excellent Triple A start, which has seen him hit the ball hard (average exit velocity above 95 mph and 90th percentile EV at 109.4 mph). He’s been more inconsistent than you’d like to see, and he’s been especially susceptible to changeups offspeed and down and away. He’ll probably see a lot of that when he first starts playing in Major League Baseball. “”.
Anthony fills in right now since Abreu is on the injured list. Although Ceddanne Rafaela has only appeared in one major league game at right field, he may play the position in the future. After spending the majority of this season playing left, Jarren Duran, a Gold Glove finalist in center the previous season, may return to center if Anthony takes over most of the left-wing responsibilities.
Top prospects Anthony, Campbell, and Mayer made an impression this spring. They interacted well with the clubhouse and did well in big-league camp.
As Boston formally looks to the future, Mayer and Anthony have joined Campbell, who was the only prospect to make the Opening Day roster at the start of the season.
