Kalos Starter Megas Locked to Ranked Rewards The biggest reveal was the long-awaited Mega Evolutions for the Kalos starters: Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja.
Instead, they’ll be distributed exclusively as Ranked Battle rewards in the Z-A Battle Club, the game’s competitive online ladder.
Two additional Mega Evolutions — Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y — are tied to the “Mega Dimensions” DLC, making them entirely inaccessible without an extra purchase on top of the base game!

POSITIVE

During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, five new Pokémon Legends Z-A Mega evolutions were unveiled; however, none of them will be accessible through standard gameplay. The Pokémon Company made the unexpected decision to make Raichu mega evolutions require a DLC purchase and Kalos Starter Mega evolutions are locked behind a multiplayer ranked ladder.

The community isn’t happy about that, as you can see here, which isn’t surprising. The new Megas are explained in detail here, along with how to obtain them.

Starter Megas for Kalos are locked to ranked rewards.

Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja—the Kalos starters’ eagerly anticipated Mega Evolutions—were the most significant revelation. However, normal exploration and adventure won’t yield their corresponding Mega Stones. Instead, the Z-A Battle Club, the game’s competitive online ladder, will be the only place to receive them as Ranked Battle rewards.

Greninjite, the first season.

Delphoxite in Season 2.

Chesnaughtite is the third season.

Though they might be redistributed in upcoming seasons, the official website affirms that these stones “cannot normally be obtained during regular gameplay.”. To obtain the stones, you must participate in online Ranked Battles.

Normally, you can’t get the stones chesnaughtite, delphoxite, and greninjite while playing normal gameplay.

No more than one Mega Stone of each type is actually possible. You cannot get another of these Mega Stones as a Ranked Battles reward if you already have one.

Raichu Megas are DLC-only.

The story of the additional purchase doesn’t end there. Due to their connection to the “Mega Dimensions” DLC, Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y are two more Mega Evolutions that are completely inaccessible without an additional purchase on top of the base game!

Knowing that these Pokémon exist and that you will need to buy a DLC to obtain them feels more like a shakedown than a celebration of Megas, even though we still don’t know what the Mega Dimension DLC will include and it might be worth the cost.

In case you missed it, Pokémon Legends Z-A will be introducing a number of new Mega evolutions. Of these, 5/9 will require an additional purchase.

Although we are extremely unhappy about this, we hope that more Mega reveals will be made available to regular, pay-once players.
