To be fair, in the first half Estêvão had his chances, as did Facundo Torres on the opposite flank, but they were largely swallowed up by our defense or Robert Sánchez.
Chelsea strikers and card suspensions should not become a norm, but Nicolas Jackson is now available for the next match.
That prompted an immediate change, with Noni Madueke and new signing João Pedro coming on and both creating great chances for themselves in the dying minutes of the match.
João Pedro seemingly came on with something to prove and did indeed do so, showing a bright spark towards the dying embers of the match.

What began as an odd lineup was further changed by Reece James suffering what is described as a muscular injury before kickoff, which gave Andrey Santos the start in midfield. This was largely due to unfortunate circumstances, including Moisés Caicedo’s suspension and Roméo Lavia’s muscular injury (again).
Nevertheless, this has been primarily billed as the Estêvão derby, and DAZN and Whistlesports have pinned our own esteemed David Pasztor’s article in their posts about it. Fair enough, Estêvão and Facundo Torres on the other side had opportunities in the first half, but Robert Sánchez and our defense largely snubbed them.
Our energetic start made it clear that we were serious about winning this tournament, and cash flow can’t hurt, especially in light of the recent UEFA fines. However, as can happen with this team through training or complacency, we let Palmeiras settle into the game and started to defend more as the first half went on.
Liam Delap’s and Levi Colwill’s suspensions carry a lot more weight than the others because of the heated midfield and the fact that, although cards were given sparingly in the first half, they became more frequent as the game went on. This had a big effect on the team that advanced. Although card suspensions for Chelsea strikers shouldn’t become commonplace, Nicolas Jackson is now available for the upcoming game.
Despite the challenging angle, he managed to separate himself from Colwill and made Sánchez regret his inadequate coverage of the near post, but the second half was not perfect as the Estêvão derby picked up speed.
A quick change resulted from that, as both Noni Madueke and newcomer João Pedro entered the game and created excellent opportunities for themselves in the closing minutes. With a bright spark directed at the match’s dying embers, João Pedro appeared to have something to prove and succeeded. Chelsea was clearly superior to the other team as the crucial midfield tackles persisted, even though the overall play was not as good as we would have liked.
