Ocasio-Cortez endorses Mamdani for NYC mayor following first Democratic primary debate

ABC7 New York

NEW YORK CITY — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani on Thursday as her top choice for New York City mayor, a widely expected backing coming the morning after the first New York City mayoral debate.
“This is actually the perfect time to have received her endorsement, because we have just enough time to make this case to New Yorkers,” Mamdani said.
Mamdani is attempting to coalesce the anti-Cuomo support among progressives, which are unlikely to rank Cuomo in their top five.
“I am the last person on this stage that Mr. Trump wants to see as mayor,” Cuomo said.
AOC will rank New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams second; New York City Comptroller Brad Lander third; former New York Comptroller Scott Stringer fourth; and New York State Senator Zellnor Myrie fifth.

NEW YORK CITY — The morning after the first mayoral debate in New York City, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani as her top pick for mayor of New York City. This endorsement was largely anticipated.

Ocasio-Cortez stated in the endorsement that “Assemblymember Mamdani has demonstrated a real ability on the ground to put together a coalition of working-class New Yorkers that is strongest to lead the pack.”. “We have to face that head-on in the last few minutes of the race. “..”.

The endorsement, which closes the distance between Mamdani and the former governor of New York, was much expected. The weeks leading up to the Democratic primary on June 24 saw Andrew Cuomo.

Wednesday night, Mamdani was totally focused on Cuomo, who had his own answers ready.

We have just enough time to convince New Yorkers of this, so this is the ideal moment to have her support, Mamdani stated.

Progressives, who are unlikely to place Cuomo in their top five, are supporting Mamdani’s anti-Cuomo campaign.

The frontrunner, former governor Andrew Cuomo, was piled on by the other candidates in their first televised debate as they pressed him for answers regarding the sexual harassment claims that forced him out of office.

and COVID nursing home deaths reported by the state.

Cuomo asserted that he was most qualified to confront President Trump.

Cuomo declared, “I am the last person Mr. Trump wants to see as mayor on this stage.”.

“As a progressive Muslim immigrant who genuinely stands up for what I believe in, I am Donald Trump’s worst nightmare,” Mamdani retorted. “.

Council Speaker Adrienne Adams was in awe when Cuomo declared that he had no regrets about his time as governor.

“There are no regrets regarding the slow walking of personal protective equipment (PPE) and vaccinations to black and brown communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Really?” Adrienne Adams said, “no regrets.”.

Cuomo deserves credit, according to former mayor Bill de Blasio.

His responses regarding Trump, in my opinion, were really forceful. He did a good job, in my opinion, on a number of counts. The thing that struck me the most, though, was how enthusiastic Zohran Mamdani, his principal rival, appeared. At times, Cuomo appeared a bit more languid and low-energy. Bill de Blasio stated that the dynamic would be intriguing.

New York State Senator Zellnor Myrie will be ranked fifth by the AOC, followed by former New York Comptroller Scott Stringer, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, and New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams.

These are the statements issued by the candidates Ocasio-Cortez ranked.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a once-in-a-generation leader who has spearheaded the fight for working people. She shocked the world and changed our politics in 2018. With the backing of @AOC and this movement, we will follow suit on June 24,” Mamdani stated.

“Having the support of AOC in this race makes me extremely proud. She understands what it takes to oppose Trump and halt Cuomo, and she observes that we are forming the wide-ranging, working-class alliance necessary for victory. “Come on, let’s do this,” Adams said.

“Happy to have the backing of AOC in our pursuit of a more secure, cost-effective, and well-managed city for all New Yorkers,” Lander stated.

In the Democratic mayoral primary of 2021, Ocasio-Cortez had supported progressive candidate Maya Wiley.
