Neon is acquiring the stateside rights to the Brazilian film The Secret Agent, which was directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and is rumored to be a finalist for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. There are plans to release it in theaters this year.
Following last year’s Anora, Justine Triet’s 2023 winner Anatomy of a Fall, 2022’s Triangle of Sadness, 2021’s Titane, and 2019’s Parasite, Neon will have won the Palme d’Or six times in a row if the 1977-set political thriller wins the big prize at Cannes. The two Best Picture Oscar winners from that group were Anora and Parasite.
On Sunday, The Secret Agent made its Cannes competition debut to completely new Rotten Tomatoes reviews. Hermila Guedes, Carlos Francisco, Alice Carvalho, Gabriel Leone, Maria Fernanda Cândido, and Wagner Moura are the film’s main actors.
